ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Veronica Christ poured in a career-high 28 points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team as they handled Moravian Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium to open up Landmark Conference play with a win. The Blue Jays outscored the Greyhounds in three of the four quarters and won the game, 72-60.
Two of Christ's career-high 11 made field goals came on two of the first three possessions for Elizabethtown (5-2, 1-0 Landmark) as they were out 4-0. A few minutes later, her jumper off a
Mikayla Ruth steal put the Blue Jays ahead 9-2.
Moravian (5-3, 0-1 Landmark) got back into the game behind Emily Markowski. Down seven, Markowski grabbed an offensive board and got the putback to fall to make it a five-point deficit. Though a
Lydia Lawson steal and fastbreak layup restored the seven-point advantage for E-town, Karlie Brogan and Markowski hit consecutive shots to get the Greyhounds within a possession.
Morgan Amy knocked down a jumper with five seconds left in the first as Moravian closed out the quarter on a 12-6 run and trailed by a point, 15-14.
Brogan gave the Hounds their first lead of the game on the team's first possession of the second quarter, but it was conceded 40 seconds later when Ruth dropped in a three to return Elizabethtown to the lead.
The game didn't get to be more than a one-possession tilt through the reminder of the quarter until Christ and Ruth changed that. Down two, Christ converted Lawson's steal into three points for the Jays as she drilled one of her team-high four treys. A possession later, Christ pulled down on of her 10 rebounds in the game and scored the layup to push the lead to three. The junior came down with another offensive board the next time down the floor and found Ruth for the jumper and E-town was ahead by five with less than a minute to go in the half, Christ closed out the half with a pair of free throws and the Blue Jays led 32-25 at the break.
Out of the half, Christ had the first five points of the third quarter as her hot shooting continued. Her three with 7:54 left in the quarter made it a 37-29 game.
The Greyhounds didn't go away as Brogan and Jordan Beneducci did some damage down low to get Moravian back within four.
Lawson inbounded to
Marissa Emlet off the set play from below the basket for a short jumper in the paint. After Morgan Amy responded with a layup, the Jays' defense came up with another theft and turned it into points. An E-town turnover led to Moravian possession, but Christ was able to force a turnover and sent Lawson out on the break. The senior went to the hoop with ease and then the ensuing Elizabethtown possession,
Clare Marchese hit a three from the right wing to make it a nine-point game as the Greyhounds called the timeout.
The Blue Jays finished the third quarter on an 8-0 run to seize control of the game and went into the fourth ahead, 52-38.
Elizabethtown kept the foot on the gas and didn't allow Moravian to get back into single digits over the final 10 minutes of play. The Blue Jays drew seven fouls and went 9-for-11 from the foul line in the quarter and were 16-for-20 over the course of the game.
Brogan hit a three with less than half a minute left and that was the final basket of the game as E-town rode out the clock to hand Moravian a 72-60 loss.
Lawson ended the game with a career-high 13 assists while Christ recorded the double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Ruth had 12 points for E-town and Hawkins also reached double figures with 10 points.
Elizabethtown will travel to Puerto Rico and play a pair of games, starting with Roanoke on Wednesday, December 18.
