Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Three in double figures as Blue Jays fall to UT Dallas

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- Veronica Christ had a team-high 13 points and Angie Hawkins and Marissa Emlet each provided 11 points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in a 69-57 loss to the University of Texas at Dallas in the final game of the Puerto Rico Classic.

Victoria Pena got UT Dallas (5-3) ahead with a hot start. The Comets' guard hit a few early threes, two of her seven in the game, and after a 10-2 run to begin the game, Elizabethtown (5-4) called a 30 second timeout to settle things down.

Christ got the Jays going with two baskets in the paint out of the timeout. Though, Pena and Raenett Skinner kept UT Dallas ahead comfortably as the pair hit back-to-back shots to return the lead back up to nine points.

Marissa Emlet hit a big trey from the bench-side corner and after a Comets' turnover, Christ's layup on the fastbreak made it a four-point game, 17-13, with 3:42 left in the first. The Blue Jays ended the quarter down by the same margin, 22-18.

Lydia Lawson's steal and consequent finish on the break got E-town within a basket of taking the lead early in the second quarter.

Skinner hit a pair of foul shots to make it 24-20. It would be the last points for a few minutes as Elizabethtown held UT Dallas scoreless for a 2:11. The only issue for the Jays was, they went scoreless at the offensive end as well.

Down only six after another set of free throws for the Comets, Jillian Nagy got inside and drew a foul on the right block and split a pair at the line. Christ grabbed the rebound and kept possession for E-town. Nagy then dished to Mikayla Ruth, who drained a three of her own, to get the Blue Jays back within two, 26-24. Pena cancelled out the three with one her own on the next offensive set for the Comets as the lead went back up to five.

Elizabethtown went into the locker room at the half down eight, 35-27.

The Blue Jays came out on the mission to start the third quarter as Emlet, Hawkins, and Lawson each had baskets while the defense didn't allow UT Dallas a single point for over three minutes to begin the third. After Lawson's bucket in transition, the Comets called a timeout. The Jays' fastbreak layup came off of one of Christ's four steals in the game.

UT Dallas responded with a 7-0 run after Lawson got the ball to Christ for a layup inside. Emlet helped the Blue Jays out with four straight makes at the foul line after E-town trailed by 11. Yaya Cannon ended the third with a steal and a quick bucket to make it a six-point game going into the fourth, 48-42.

Like she started the game, Pena hit two three-pointers in the early portion of the quarter as the Comets stretched the lead back up to nine.

As UT Dallas tried to pull away, the Blue Jays continued to battle and hang around. Cannon and Christ each hit treys to keep the deficit in single digits. Hawkins got EC within five with 5:08 left in the game, but it was the closest Elizabethtown would get the rest of the way.

The women's basketball team will return to the court on Saturday, January 4, against Southern Virginia at Thompson Gymnasium as 6 p.m.
