Late Scranton goal downs field hockey

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team got the game tied up in the third quarter, but a late goal in the fourth was enough to get Scranton past the Blue Jays on Saturday at Weiss Field. Chloe Smith recorded the goal for E-town in the loss.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead 6:30 into the first quarter on Gracie McClatchy's goal and that's where the score held for the rest of the first half. Scranton (10-5, 5-0 Landmark) held E-town to a single shot in the first and second quarters.

In turn, though, Elizabethtown (5-9, 3-2 Landmark) was doing its own defensive work and also held the Royals to one shot over 15 minutes in the second.

The Blue Jays controlled the third quarter, racking up for penalty corners and coverting one of them into the game-tying goal. Olivia Beachley inserted the ball to Smith, who let loose a shot that found its way into the cage to make it a 1-1 affair with a quarter and a half to go.

Late in the fourth, McClatchy clanked a shot off the post, but Scranton earned a penalty stroke with less than three minutes to go. Amelia Sharp was able to score on the stroke and give the Royals a 2-1 lead.

A last-ditch shot by Lauren Scheib with time winding down was blocked and the Royals held off any Jays' rally attempt to stay unbeaten in the Landmark.

The field hockey team plays at Swarthmore on Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m.
