Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Drew outlasts men's basketball to stay unbeaten in Landmark play

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A spirited effort over the course of the first half was not enough as Drew made a run in the second half and outlasted the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team on Monday in Landmark Conference action. Bryce Greene led the Blue Jays with a team-high 17 points, but Nate Aldrich stole the show with a 22-point, 15-rebound double-double for the Rangers.

Greene got off to a hot start for Elizabethtown (8-8, 3-3 Landmark), shooting 50 percent from the floor and netting 13 first-half points. That came, though, after a 7-0 run by Drew (14-3, 6-0 Landmark) to begin the game. After Connor Moffatt's three, Greene got three the hard way, going to the rack and taking the contact while making the shot. He knocked down the free throw to complete the and-one and E-town trailed 7-6 after four and a half minutes.

Greene got the Blue Jays in front with back-to-back shots from the field. He got inside for a layup and after Jamil Pines-Elliott snagged a defensive board on Cole Hanntz's missed three, Moffatt found Greene at the other end for a trey to give EC a two-point lead, 11-9. Brandon Berry hit a three a minute and a half later and extended the lead to five.

The Rangers weren't hitting shots and finished the half just 8-for-27 and 3-for-11 from deep. They did stay in the game at the foul line with nine makes on 12 attempts. Elizabethtown got up by as many as 10, 23-13, on Michael Pastore's three-pointer with 8:55 left in the first half.

A Zach Nannen jumper from the left elbow put E-town ahead by nine with 1:31 to go in the half, but a pair of buckets to close out the half by Drew's leading scorer Riley Collins cut the deficit to five by halftime. The Jays led 33-28 at the break.

Elizabethtown's sizzling shooting cooled off in the second half as Aldrich began to take advantage in the post with his 6-6 frame. Aldrich, held to six points and five boards in the first 20 minutes, posted a double-double in the second half alone with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Matt Thomas helped E-town get off to a quick start defensively in the opening minute of the second half. He got his hands to a pass to create the steal and dished off to Ethan DuBois, who went the other way for the fast break layup. A Greene layup made it 39-33 in favor of the Blue Jays, but the Rangers would go on an 8-0 run to jump back on top for the first time since the first half. Aldrich hauled in an Elizabethtown missed and proceeded to keep Drew's next offensive possession alive with an offensive rebound. The big man went up for the put back and got fouled, made the shot, and the free throw to boot to put Drew up 41-39 with 13:33 left in the game.

The Rangers and Blue Jays went back and forth as the visitors led by no more than four for a seven-minute stretch of the second half. Collin's layup with 6:37 remaining gave Drew its biggest lead of the second half at the time.

Elizabethtown kept close, but after a split at the foul line, down four, Darius Reiter knocked down a three that put the Rangers up by seven, 63-56, with 2:56 left. Missed shots down the stretch for the Jays didn't help the cause as Drew hit free throws as E-town tried to extend the game, but to no avail.

Greene's 17 points are the fifth straight game he's reached double figures. Moffatt grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with 9 points. Thomas and Berry each had 10 points. Aldrich led Drew with a game-high 22 points and 15 rebounds. Collins ended with 17 and Reiter posted 15 and half of the team's three-point makes (three of team's six).

The Blue Jays will host Juniata on Wednesday, January 23, at 7 p.m.
