WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Down by six at the half, the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team outscored Catholic 40-23 in the second half to power past the Cardinals and steal a Landmark Conference win on the road, 60-59.
Brandon Berry and
Bryce Greene combined for 41 points in the win. Greene secured 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Elizabethtown (8-7, 3-2 Landmark) suffered through a slow shooting start to Wednesday night's game. The Blue Jays shot just 27.6 percent from the field in the first half and only 2-for-18 from deep. Catholic (6-10, 2-3 Landmark) was slightly better at 32 percent, but only managed 26 first-half points.
The Cardinals were up 7-0 right off the bat as Andre Mitchell knocked down a three on the game's opening possession. Riley Hayes had the next two buckets for CATHU to make it 7-0 less than two minutes in. Berry and Greene each hit threes and by 14:07, E-town was down only three, 11-8. The duo each had seven first-half points.
Matt Thomas helped bring the Jays level at 14-14 with a pair of free throws. He would tie the game up again at 16-16 with a bucket in the paint. A Catholic miss at the other end led to Berry's layup that gave E-town its first lead of the game with 5:33 to go in the half. The lead changed hands three more times before the Cardinals scored the final seven points to take a 26-20 lead into the locker room.
Elizabethtown came out a different team offensively as they shot over 43 percent from the floor and hit 8 of 17 threes. They held Catholic to 9-for-35 shooting over the final 20 minutes and outscored the Cardinals by 17 points.
Collin Hartmann put CATHU up by eight with a three-pointer two minutes into the second half that made it 31-23. From there, E-town would close the game on a 37-18 run en route to the double-digit victory.
Hartmann's trey forced the Blue Jays into a timeout. Out of it, Greene drained a three and then connected on a jumper the following possession.
Michael Pastore followed with another three and the deficit was down to just two.
Catholic got stuck on 43 points. Mitchell knocked down a jumper to give the hosts an eight-point cushion, but they would go scoreless for over five minutes and Elizabethtown used that time to get back into the game and grab the lead. Berry started off a string of four straight makes from beyond the arc as he,
Connor Moffatt, Greene, and Pastore all hit from deep and that once eight-point deficit turned into a four-point 47-43 lead. Once they had it, they never relinquished it as the Cardinals' shooting woes in the latter half of the second half continued.
Berry put the game out of reach with two foul shots with 30 seconds left as E-town finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. Berry had six of the eight all in the final 30 seconds of play. He led the Jays with 21 points while Greene added 20. The two combined for seven of the team's 10 three-pointers. Riley Hayes led Catholic with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Elizabethtown hosts Drew on Saturday, January 19, at 4 p.m.
