SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Looking for its third straight win in Landmark Conference play at Susquehanna on Saturday, the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team had a lead in the second half, but saw the River Hawks retake it and pull away in the late stages. Susquehanna won 84-70.
Brandon Berry led E-town with a team-high 19 points.
The teams were back and forth through the first six and a half minutes. Zach Knecht put Susquehanna (10-5, 3-1 Landmark) ahead on their first possession and Elizabethtown (7-7, 2-2 Landmark) would come back to tie the score three different times. Down 8-6,
Connor Moffatt and Berry hit consecutive treys for the Blue Jays to first give E-town its first lead of the game and then extend it to four after Berry sank his shot from distance.
A 7-0 run capped by Jaden Martin's three put the River Hawks back up by three, 15-12.
Ethan DuBois then found
Zach Nannen for a three-pointer to retie the score, 15-15, with 9:20 to go in the half.
There were three more lead changes before Susquehanna held the advantage for the final 4:21 of the first half. Down by three points on the last possession of the half, Berry was fouled beyond the arc with three seconds left. The senior knocked down all three attempts and sent Elizabethtown into the locker room down by two instead of five, 35-33. Berry had the Jays' last five points of the half, all from the free throw line.
Moffatt and Berry combined for an 8-0 run between the two and
Bryce Greene added to it as the Blue Jays were ahead by seven, 50-43, with 13:55 remaining in the game. It was a 10-run all together over a two minute and 28 second period of the second half that took E-town from a 43-40 deficit to their largest lead of the contest.
The River Hawks responded, holding Elizabethtown scoreless as they went on a 12-0 run to jump back ahead with a five-point advantage after Lukas Yurasits dropped in a three with under ten minutes to go.
Berry and Greene would each hit a three to keep the game within two possessions, but Susquehanna kept at it and slowly got away from E-town in the final five minutes.
The River Hawks outscored the Blue Jays 49-37 in the second half and won by 14 to move to 3-1 in the conference. Berry led four in double figures for Elizabethtown. Greene had 15,
Michael Pastore added 13, and Moffatt finished with 10. Dominic Dunn had a game-high 22 points in the win for SU.
The men's basketball team will travel to Catholic on Wednesday, January 16, at 7 p.m.
