Jays win shootout at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Friday night's non-conference game between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Muhlenberg needed two overtimes plus a shootout to decide a winner. Both teams converted four of five opportunities in the shootout, but it was E-town that was get the game-winning goal in the sixth round of shooters. Olivia Beachley scored the one that counted most and the Blue Jays emerged 2-1 winners to move to 3-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Elizabethtown (3-1) went up early in the second half on Beachley's second goal of the season. The score came off a penalty corner started by Beachley. Maggie Fees sent the ball back in toward the left post where Beachley stepped back into play and the junior put it in to put E-town ahead 1-0 less than two minutes into the final 35 minute period.

Courtney Allen tied the game for Muhlenberg (0-3) about midway through the second half. Jordyn Kamis provided the assist on Allen's first goal of the season.

Margo Donlin made a save on Allen a few minutes later, but from there on, did not need to stop another shot as the game went to overtime.

Jordan Segrave needed to be on her game in the second overtime as Elizabethtown came out firing. Brooke Zehr had a pair of chances at goal stopped by Segrave. Fees also had an attempt stopped by the Mules' goalie to prevent sudden victory for the Jays.

In the shootout, Grace Hardy, Beachley, Fees, and Lauren Scheib all converted their attempts. The left post denied E-town's final chance of the first round of five shooters, and with Muhlenberg converting their last to extend the shootout, a sixth round was needed.

The Mules went first and Donlin made the save to give Beachley, who was chosen to go for the Blue Jays, a chance to win it for the visitors. Beachley did just that, converting her attempt and lifting Elizabethtown to the 2-1 win.

The Blue Jays will host Ursinus on Wednesday, September 12, at 5 p.m.
