Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Hardy, Donlin help Blue Jays best York (Pa.)

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A late go-ahead goal by Grace Hardy and a stout defensive effort from the Elizabethtown College field hockey's defenders and goalie Margo Donlin helped the Blue Jays best York (Pa.), 2-1, in non-conference action at Wolf Field on Wednesday. Hardy assisted on E-town's first-half goal before producing the game-winner.

Lauren Scheib scored her second goal of the season 3:54 into Wednesday's game. Hardy had the ball along the right endline and sent the ball to Scheib at the near post. The junior swiped at the ball and got it back York (Pa.) (3-4) goalie Sam Keating for the tally on the game's first shot.

The midfields for both sides got plenty of work in as the game went up and down the field. The Spartans spent the majority of the mid-portion of the first half down in Elizabethtown's (5-2) end. YCP earned five penalty corners in the span of a few minutes, but the defense blocked several shots and the one Lindsay Nye got through went off the pads of Donlin, who finished with six saves.

E-town regained some of the momentum from early on and turned the field around. Madison Kubik's chance was saved with a little over 12 minutes left in the first half. Keating also had six saves for York.

Greta Plappert ripped a shot at Donlin, who pushed the ball aside off one of the Spartans' nine first-half penalty corners. Plappert got YCP's only goal of the game 2:20 before the half.

Elizabethtown seemed to gain some strength, despite the warmer conditions, as the second half wore along. Down a player, though, E-town was able to earn a corner, which set up Hardy's go-ahead goal. Olivia Beachley inserted the ball back into play. Maggie Fees wound up and struck a ball at goal that Keating saved. The ball remained in the critical scoring area as Brooke Zehr took a shot at goal, only to be stopped by Keating as well. Hardy, however, was able to put the ball into the cage off the rebound and give E-town a 2-1 lead with 12:30 remaining.

Donlin made one final save with less than 10 minutes to go and that was all she would need to do in the waning moments of contest.

It was Scheib's second consecutive game with two points and Hardy's first career game of at least a goal and an assist. Donlin bumped up her save percentage to .841 and kept her GAA below 1.00, at 0.96.

The Blue Jays open Landmark Conference play this weekend when they host Susquehanna on Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m.
