Beachley buries penalty stroke in OT to lift field hockey over Susquehanna

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Olivia Beachley got her chance at redemption in overtime as the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Susquehanna needed the extra session to decide a winner on the opening weekend of Landmark Conference play. Beachley took her second penalty stroke of the game and hit the back of the cage in the first overtime to lift E-town to a 1-0 win over the River Hawks.

Susquehanna (3-5, 0-1 Landmark) challenged the defense of Elizabethtown (6-2, 1-0 Landmark) from the opening whistle, using their speed on the outside to get the ball up and down the wings. While the River Hawks had the advantage in speed, when the ball reached the circle, the Blue Jays were sure not to allow any easy or open chances. Susquehanna's top scoring threat, Hunter Pitman, was a key mark for the Jays and they did well in not allowing the Hawks' junior forward to score.

The same could be said for SU's defense in handling E-town. Emily DiGaetano only had to make four saves during regulation and overtime, as did Jays' goalie Margo Donlin. DiGaetano's biggest save of the game came in the second half.

After a scoreless first half where only a combined eight shots were registered between the teams, the feeling became reminiscent of the 2016 Landmark Conference Championship game at Wolf Field between the two schools. Scoring opportunities were at a premium and each time the ball came down to either attacking end, one shot could be all that was needed.

Elizabethtown's chance came a little over 50 minutes into Saturday's conference opener as Beachley stepped up to take a penalty stroke that was awarded to the Blue Jays. DiGaetano was able to make the correct read to save the shot and keep it 0-0.

The River Hawks pushed for the game-winner with less than ten minutes to go, generating a few penalty corner chances, but Donlin made two saves in the final five minutes and force overtime.

Susquehanna had two corners early in overtime, but Elizabethtown did a good job of handling SU's set plays. Anna Dietl pushed a shot just outside the right post. Donlin came back to make a save on Pitman minutes later.

E-town was able to break out on a two-on-one with less than 2:30 remaining as Beachley and Brooke Zehr rushed the River Hawks' goal. Beachley had the ball coming down the right side and chopped a sharply hit ball to Zehr, who did well to control it in the circle. Zehr maintained controlled as DiGaetano came out to narrow the angle. The sophomore forward dribbled around the goalie and was about to shoot when she got tripped up. A second penalty stroke was awarded to Elizabethtown and again, Beachley stepped up to take it.

Without hesitation, Beachley wristed the ball to the same spot as she went earlier in the game, and this time beat the goalie for her second game-winning goal of her career. It was the junior's fourth of the season. Donlin earned her fourth shutout of the season and second in her last three starts.

The Blue Jays travel to face Eastern on Wednesday, September 26, at 4:30 p.m.
