ST. DAVID'S, Pa. -- Down by a goal in the second half,
Lauren Scheib scored twice for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team to help the Blue Jays come from behind and beat Eastern, 3-2. Scheib scored her first career hat trick and
Margo Donlin made four saves for E-town's fourth straight win.
Emily Garvin tried for her first goal of the season 1:14 into Wednesday's non-conference matchup, but her shot was saved by Marley Redfield. Just 38 seconds later, Eastern's (2-7) second shot of the game turned into the first goal of the game. Joelle Wash was denied by Donlin before Macey Talhem was able to find the back of the cage to make it 1-0 Eagles 1:52 into the contest.
Scheib, who lead Elizabethtown (7-2) with 10 shots and seven on goal, had her first go at goal at the 3:46 mark, but her scoring attempt was saved by Redfield.
Maggie Fees sent a shot on goal off E-town's penalty corner, but Redfield denied another Jays' shot. She made five of her 13 saves in the first half.
The Eagles had a five-minute spell down by E-town's goal that included four penalty corners. The entire sequence started with a save by Donlin, one of her four. She stopped Wash twice more as Eastern looked to make it 2-0 with a few set piece chances, but the Blue Jays' defense held.
EC came back with Scheib testing Redfield two more times. Though the Eastern goalie had the better of the first half, Scheib would punch through in the goal column in the second.
The beginning of the second half belonged to Elizabethtown and it started with Scheib's first of three in the game 1:08 into the final 35 minutes.
Madison Kubik supplied the assist on Scheib's third of the season.
E-town went for the lead as
Olivia Beachley,
Brooke Zehr, Fees, and Garvin had chances to put the Jays up a goal, but Redfield stopped six shots as the Eagles were able to weather the storm and get through it still at 1-1.
Becky Howard recorded Eastern's first shot of the second half at 45:38 and that gave the Eagles the lead back at 2-1. It didn't last long, however, as the Blue Jays were back even a little over two minutes later when Scheib registered goal number two at 47:49. Fees had a saved stopped by Redfield, but Scheib was there to put it in for her fourth of the season.
Elizabethtown held Eastern in check while the offense continued to push for the game-winning goal. That goal came at 64:16, with 5:44 left in the game, as Scheib completed her hat trick to put the Jays in front for the first time in the game.
The defense didn't allow a shot after Howard's goal as E-town saw the game out once the lead was attained and improved to 7-2 on the year with their fourth straight win.
Elizabethtown heads to Huntingdon, Pa. on Saturday, September 29, to face the defending Landmark champions Juniata at 5:30 p.m.
