Field hockey takes down defending champion Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The only shot that mattered came off the stick of Maggie Fees as the Elizabethtown College field hockey team went to Juniata and shut out the defending conference champions 1-0 Saturday evening. Margo Donlin recorded her fifth shutout of the season in the win.

Elizabethtown (8-2, 2-0 Landmark) capitalized on a penalty corner in the first ten minutes as Fees found the back of the cage at the 7:00 mark. Olivia Beachley inserted the corner and Emily Garvin set up Fees for the opening goal.

Juniata's (4-4, 1-1 Landmark) first few shots were not on target, but Tyler Wilson helped keep one out with a defensive save with a little over ten minutes to go before halftime. She stopped Lindsay Scholten's chance at tying the game up.

The Eagles ramped up the offensive pressure, starting out the second half with four straight penalty corners, but the Elizabethtown defense did not waiver. A shot was blocked on the fourth corner, and then, when Juniata received a fifth, the defense again came up with the block.

Juniata tried and tried, and had a 9-1 edge in penalty corners in the second half, but couldn't beat Donlin and the Jays' defense. Donlin made her first of two saves of the game at 52:28 on Rebecca Waite's shot that came from another JC corner. Donlin stopped Waite again 14 minutes later.

Unable to break through, E-town was able to withstand the pressure and hold off the Eagles to take down the defending champs 1-0 on their home field. It was the fifth straight win overall for the Blue Jays, who improved to 2-0 in the Landmark.

Elizabethtown will host Wilkes on Wednesday, October 3, at 4:30 p.m. on Wolf Field.
