Blue Jays blank Bobcats for season-opening win

FROSTBURG, MD. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team played Frostburg State to a second straight 2-0 shutout in favor of the Blue Jays. E-town scored once in each half to open up the 2018 season with a win at Bobcat Stadium. It was the Jays' first shutout win to start a season since 2007 when they won 3-0 over Misericordia.

Elizabethtown (1-0) had a look at goal at 5:37, but Brooke Zehr's shot was saved by Frostburg State (0-1) goalie Sierra Smizer. E-town continued to pressure as it took over 27 minutes for the Bobcats to finally register a shot. Margo Donlin made an initial stop and Tyler Wilson came up with a defensive save to keep the game scoreless at 27:19.

Maggie Fees was close to scoring, but Frostburg State came up with a defensive save of their own with less than two minutes to go in the first half.

The Blue Jays broke through in the late stages of the first half. Off Olivia Beachley's corner insert, Fees set up Lauren Scheib, whose shot got past Smizer and into the cage for the first of her E-town career. That goal gave EC a 1-0 lead at the half.

Elizabethtown went on to outshoot FSU 6-1 in the second half and had a 7-0 advantage in corners. E-town took advantage of another corner opportunity, this time with Beachley tallying the goal. Zehr tipped a shot by Fees, and the junior was there to stick it in to make it 2-0 a little over midway through the second half.

The 2-0 lead was a comfortable for the Blue Jays, who didn't allow a single shot over the final 21 minutes of the game. Donlin made two saves in the game and earned her first shutout of the season.

Elizabethtown hosts Dickinson on Saturday, September 1, for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup at Wolf Field.
