ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- There was only one goal scored in Saturday afternoon's non-conference matchup between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Dickinson. That tally came off the stick of
Grace Hardy in the second half to propel the Blue Jays to a 1-0 win over the Red Devils and keep E-town unbeaten to begin the season.
Emily Garvin put a shot on goal for Elizabethtown (2-0) less than three minutes into the game on Saturday. Her shot was stopped by Heather Meeder. The Blue Jays had a penalty corner shortly thereafter, but nothing would come of it.
While E-town controlled the beginning of the game, Dickinson (0-2) settled in and took over the momentum. The Red Devils wound up with a 10-2 advantage in penalty corner by the first half's end, but the Jays' defense remained stout.
Margo Donlin faced a chance by Marie Laverdiere from out top, but she was able to use her blocker to bat the ball away. Donlin came up with another save on Hannah Spiri a little over a minute later.
The game would go into halftime still tied 0-0.
Dickinson had a pair of corners early in the second half, but after Donlin stopped another Laverdiere effort, the ball came out and Elizabethtown was going the other way with it on the counter rush.
Madison Kubik drove at the circle and dished off to
Grace Hardy, who ran stride for stride with her junior teammate toward goal. She took the feed from Kubik, stickhandled her way closer to goal and sent a shot five-hole on the goalie and into the cage to open the scoring. It was the first goal of Hardy's career.
Each team took turns with the better spell of play over the remaining 30 minutes of the second half. Even as the Red Devils pressed for the game-tying goal, the defensive line of
Renee Grill,
Maggie Fees, and
Tyler Wilson were there to snuff out attacks and stop Dickinson in their tracks and send E-town the other way. Donlin did not have to face another shot on goal after stopping Laverdiere's chance, which came 2:51 into the second half.
The Blue Jays looked ready to put in a second as they had Dickinson on their heels nearing the end of the game. EC had a few penalty corners in the final minute of play and were able to run out the clock to keep the unbeaten streak alive.
Donlin stopped four shots in all to earn her second consecutive shutout and second straight clean sheet for the Elizabethtown defense to begin the year.
Elizabethtown is on the road at Stockton on Wednesday, September 5, at 7 p.m.
