Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey clipped by Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- This year's non-conference contest between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Stockton did not need overtime like the 2017 version matchup did. The Ospreys took down E-town 2-0 in regulation Wednesday night with a goal in each half to halt the Jays' two-game win streak to start the season.

Stockton (3-0) came out on a mission, racking up four penalty corners in the first 6:19 of the game to put the pressure on the Elizabethtown (2-1) defense. After an initial shot by Britney Stein that Margo Donlin saved preceding the corners, the Jays did not allow a shot from any of the set play opportunities.

The Ospreys did manage to break through at 23:35 as Stein recorded her first of the season, poking in a loose ball by the cage to make it 1-0.

Usually most vulnerable to giving up a goal right after scoring, Elizabethtown came back at Stockton. Maggie Fees knocked a shot that ended up wide after Olivia Beachley delivered an insert from one of the Blue Jays' first-half penalty corners.

Madison Kubik had a chance stopped by goalie Emily Gilligan with less than four minutes to go in the first half. The Jays pressured for the game-tying goal, but couldn't get one to go before the clock ran out to end the first half.

In a reversal from the start of the game, E-town was the aggressor out of the gate in the second half. Off another corner chance, Fees had a shot block and Lauren Scheib's attempt at her second of the season was saved by Gilligan. Victoria Caiazzo made a defensive save for the Ospreys as Elizabethtown was primed for a goal. A stroke was called and Niya Calloway came in to make a save to keep it 1-0 just over three minutes into the second half.

Cassie Roberts had to make a defensive save at the E-town end of the field, but 34 seconds later it was Caiazzo that found the back of the cage with a wrist shot from the right side to make it 2-0.

The Jays continued with a relentless attack all second half, but just couldn't get the right bounce. Gilligan made back-to-back saves on Scheib and Brooke Zehr with the clock winding down to less than three minutes to go. Despite outshooting the Ospreys 13-5 in the final 35 minutes, Stockton held on for the combined shutout. E-town also had an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners in the second half.

Scheib and Fees were active for the Blue Jays with a combined 13 shots. Donlin made five saves in the game, a season-high. Gilligan had six for Stockton.

Elizabethtown travels to Muhlenberg on Friday, September 7, at 7 p.m.
