Manning has three hits as Jays fall in series finale at #24 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Derek Manning led the Elizabethtown College baseball team with three hits Sunday against Landmark preseason favorite and 24th-ranked Catholic, but it was the Cardinals' Anthony Ferlise who came up with a go-ahead three-run double in the seventh to top the Blue Jays, 6-4.

Catholic scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, but RBI singles from Brennan Snyder and Manning allowed the Blue Jays to tie it in the fourth.

Elizabethtown (7-12, 3-4 Landmark) trailed by one entering the seventh following Jake Crist's fifth-inning solo homer.

Manning laced a one-out double down the right field line and with two down, junior Mike Christy punched a single through the left side to score Manning and even the score at three.

The Cardinals (19-6, 7-5) used a lead-off single from Ryan Tracy and a pair of walks to load the bases against E-town pitcher Anthony Cameron, before coach Adam Sheibley called on Kelly Holdren to try and work out of the jam.

Holdren fell behind 3-1 and Ferlise took advantage with a bases-clearing triple to put the Cardinals back in front, 6-3. The Blue Jays brought the tying and go-ahead runs to the plate in the top of the ninth. While the visitors managed to scrape together an unearned run, they would get no more against Cardinals' closer Collin Brown, who recorded his fourth save of the season.

Manning was 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. Only Christy joined him with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

E-town pitcher Mike Garvey produced a quality start, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings. Neither Garvey nor Catholic starter Ross Dean (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 4 K) factored into the decision.

Jack Ropelewski tossed 2.2 innings of one-run ball in relief of Dean to earn the victory. Cameron suffered the loss, but freshman Cory Freedner was perfect in 1.2 innings and induced an inning-ending double play following Ferlise's three-run double in the seventh.

Shortstop Jack Hennessy and first baseman Brennan Cotter had two hits each for Catholic, while Crist scored twice.

Elizabethtown begins a string of five straight non-conference games on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium against Shenandoah.
