Katie Thompson claims career assists record in loss to Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Katie Thompson became Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse's all-time assists leader during Saturday's 19-16 Landmark Conference loss to Drew at Wolf Field.

Thompson supplied a game-high nine points, seven of which came via assist. Twin sister, Carly Thompson, had seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) and Madelyn Baker recorded a double hat trick.

Drew grabbed a 1-0 lead less than two minutes in on an Allie DiDario man-up goal, but Katie Thompson set up Baker's 36th goal of the season at 24:53 to tie the game and Kelsea Kozak's career record of 109 assists.

Carly Thompson assisted on goals by Baker at 23:34 and Katie Thompson at 20:19 as the Jays (6-5, 2-1 Landmark) took a 3-1 lead.

Appropriately, Katie's record-breaking 110th career assist was delivered to Carly for the latter's 26th goal of the campaign nearing the midway point of the first half.

Katie has already set the program's single-game (10) and career assist records during her final season in the Blue and Gray. With five regular season games remaining and a potential trip to the postseason, the Havre de Grace, Maryland native is well within reach of the Blue Jays' single-season record of 63 helpers. She's also now just three points shy of becoming the eighth player in program history to register 200 career points.

The Katie-to-Carly hookup at 16:20 of the first sent E-town on a run of six unanswered goals. Carly scored a second goal in the run, along with one each from Emily Garvin, Lexie Sharp, Madelyn Baker and Katie Thompson.

The Blue Jays had their largest lead of the game, 9-2, with 7:48 remaining before halftime.

Drew (8-4, 2-1) came storming back, scoring the final seven goals of the first half to even the score at nine at halftime. The Rangers would keep that momentum rolling early in the second with five of the first six goals to go in front 14-10.

Elizabethtown wasn't done, though, answering Drew's run with a 5-1 spurt of its own to tie the score at 15. Baker scored twice, including her 40th goal of the year and Carly Thompson, Sharp and Kate Ziegler each had a goal.

Four different players scored Drew's final four goals, however, and the Blue Jays ran short on time to respond.

The Rangers totaled 42 shots to Elizabethtown's 35 in the contest. A whopping 60 shots found their way to goal, making for busy days in both cages. Drew's Katiana Michalski turned aside 14 E-town shots, while Blue Jays' goalie Abby Kopytko made 11 saves.

Allie DeDario and Sage Johnson each had eight draw controls, combining for 16 of the Rangers' 20. Thirteen of the team's draws came in the first half, a primary reason they were able to rip off seven in a row late in the period.

Sharp matched the Drew duo with eight draws of her own, while Katie Thompson had five to go along with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers.

DiDario, Mia Campanale and Jenna Morelli scored four goals apiece for the Rangers. Lauren Cassella and Charly Nolting chipped in with two-goal games.

Elizabethtown won't play at home again until the regular season finale against Catholic on April 28. The Blue Jays play their first of four straight games away from home on Wednesday at Albright. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
