Baseball erupts for 17 runs in nightcap to split with #24 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Elizabethtown salvaged a split with 24th-ranked Catholic, Friday, after breaking out for 17 runs in game two of a Landmark Conference doubleheader. The host Cardinals protected an early five-run lead to win game one, 9-4, but the Jays answered in a big way, claiming game two, 17-4.

GAME 1
Catholic 9, Elizabethtown 4

The Cardinals came out swinging in the series opener and never looked back from a five-run first inning.

Ryan Tracy started a string of five straight hits for Catholic in its first at-bats. Jake Crist and Brennan Cotter followed with back-to-back doubles and the Blue Jays were forced to play from behind the rest of the way.

Colby Smith drew a bases loaded walk and Brennan Snyder hit a sac fly to get Elizabethtown (6-11, 2-3 Landmark) on the board in the third. The Blue Jays would get as close as 6-4 in the fifth following a Taggart Hess RBI single and Snyder home run, but Catholic's Cotter hit his second homer of the afternoon, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the fifth to erase any thoughts of a comeback.

Anthony Lippy went all the way for his third complete game of the season, but the Cards got to the senior right-hander for nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits.

Catcher Anthony Knight had two hits while serving as the Blue Jays' lead-off hitter. E-town worked for its six hits and four runs (three earned) against Catholic ace Jon Mierzwa, one of the conference leaders in ERA and strikeouts. Mierzwa struck out five. Eric Moore pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.

Cotter had a huge game for the hosts at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and five RBIs. Crist was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Connor Cozad drove in two.

GAME 2
Elizabethtown 17, Catholic 4

Whatever frustrations the Blue Jays had from game one were exhausted in the nightcap. Colby Smith and Brennan Snyder each had four hits and Elizabethtown scored 11 of the first 12 runs in its second-highest scoring game of the season.

Snyder started the scoring in the top of the first, doubling to center and driving in Smith. Elizabethtown plated runs in each of the first four innings. Arley Shepherd (single), Riley McGinley (double) and Taggart Hess (double) contributed run-scoring hits during a four-run third that extended the Jays' lead to 6-0.

E-town was right back at it in the fourth, scoring four more times to make it a 10-1 game. Christy was plunked with the bases full and swiped home as part of a double steal with McGinley.

McGinley, the sophomore second baseman, drove in his second run of the game in the sixth and the Blue Jays continued to roll through the late innings.

Catholic's pitchers continued to labor as the runs piled up.

Snyder hit a two-run double and Derek Manning provided a sacrifice fly in the seventh. E-town scored twice in the eighth on an Anthony Knight sac fly and Nick Lorenz bases-loaded walk, and capped its scoring with two in the ninth on a JT Thompson sac fly and Colby Smith single.

Smith's RBI, the 109th of his career, tied him for fifth in program history with Brad Duppstadt and Darrel Justh. The fifth-year senior is 15 RBIs away from breaking Chris Romig's record of 123, set between 1997-2000.

Smith went 4-for-7 in game two and scored twice. Snyder and McGinley reached base five times. Snyder was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs scored and a walk. McGinley hit safely in all three of his official at-bats and also walked twice while driving in two and scoring a pair of runs.

Reigning Landmark Pitcher of the Week Braden Stinar worked 5.2 innings for his second win of the season. Stinar, who struck out four, was able to work around nine hits and five walks to limit the Cards to just three runs (two earned). Jared Witner struck out three in 2.1 innings and Tyler Disbrow whiffed two in a scoreless ninth.
