Blue Jays shut down Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Freshman Kate Ziegler totaled a career-high 10 points and senior Katie Thompson set Elizabethtown's single-season ground ball and caused turnover records in the Blue Jays' commanding 16-1 Landmark Conference victory at Juniata on Saturday afternoon.

Ziegler scored four goals and assisted on three more in the first half when the Jays (7-8, 3-3 Landmark) held the Eagles scoreless while opening up a 10-goal lead.

Madelyn Baker added a first-half hat trick, Lexie Sharp recorded a pair of goals and Carly Thompson scored on a free-position attempt.

Elizabethtown extended its lead to 13-0 with less than 15 minutes to play as Baker found the back of the net twice more, Ziegler potted her fifth of the day and Mirthe Berends scored her eighth goal of the season.

Baker added her 58th goal of the season before all was said and done, vaulting three spots on the Blue Jays' single-season list from 10th to seventh with a five-goal effort.

Katie Thompson, who had a game-high six assists, set up Berends' second goal of the game with 5:47 to go for her 60th assist of the season --three shy of Stephanie Kreis' single-season record 63, set back in 2010. Katie capped the scoring with six seconds to go, tying Addie Stang for seventh on the school's career scoring list with her 219th point in the process.

The Blue Jays controlled all aspects of Saturday's game. They owned a 27-6 advantage in shots, won 15-of-18 draw controls and led ground balls 17-10.

Katie Thompson's six ground balls led all players and pushed her past Sarah Cullinan (64) for the top spot on Elizabethtown's single-season list with 65. Thompson has established new season and career records for ground balls and draw controls, along with single-game and career assists records this season. She's in line to break the school's single-season assists record and is 11 points shy of the fourth 100-point season in program history.

Ziegler's 10-point game (five goals, five assists) was just the 18th such in team history. Katie Thompson finished with seven points (one goal, six assists), Baker had six (five goals, one assist), Sharp three (two goals, one assist) and Berends two (two goals).

Jennifer Beihoff got the start in goal for the Blue and Gray and earned her second career victory with little resistance. Beihoff faced just three shots and did not need to make a save in 30 minutes of work. Abby Kopytko made one save while playing the second half.

Katie Thompson and Ziegler forced three turnovers apiece to lead E-town's defensive effort. Thompson's 44 caused turnovers surpassed Cullinan's former single-season record of 43. Emily Garvin won a game-high six draws, while Sharp and Katie Thompson added four each.

Elizabethtown kept its playoff hopes alive with the win, but must upset nationally-ranked Catholic at home next Saturday and have Drew lose to Susquehanna to qualify.
