Blue Jays hang tough with #15 Catholic on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown battled 15th-ranked Catholic to within four goals early in the second half before the Cardinals eventually pulled away for a 22-12 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Madelyn Baker scored a team-high four goals to finish the season with 62. Carly Thompson and Kate Ziegler both reached the 40-goal mark by collecting two goals apiece.

The Blue Jays (7-9, 3-4 Landmark) put Catholic on its heels in the opening minutes, as Baker's goal 24 seconds in gave Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead. Ziegler made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. Both goals were set up by Katie Thompson, who eventually tied Stephanie Kreis' single-season assists record with her 63rd late in the half.

Ally Crisculo's first half hat trick spearheaded an 8-1 run for the Cardinals, who recovered from a slow start to take a five-goal lead, 8-3, with less than eight minutes left in the first half.

Mirthe Berends, Katie Thompson and Emily Garvin pushed E-town back into the mix with late first-half markers, but Catholic (11-6, 7-0) got a boost heading into the break when Nicole DiFabio converted a free-position attempt at the buzzer to put her team up 10-6.

Elizabethtown traded goals with the nine-time Landmark champions in the first 10 minutes of the second. Baker became just the seventh player in program history to produce a 60-goal season, with her second goal of the day at 21:36 and Ziegler's 40th goal came at 20:23 as the Blue Jays trailed just 12-8.

Catholic's attack would prove to be too much, however. The guests scored nine of the next 11 goals to put the game out of reach. A pair of unassisted goals by Baker completed the scoring for E-town.

The Blue Jays only trailed on the shot board 17-15 after the first half, but Catholic would double them up in the second to finish with a 39-26 edge. The Cardinals also held minor advantages in ground balls (21-18) and draw controls (20-15).

Baker and Katie Thompson (one goal, three assists) led the Jays with four points, Ziegler had three (two goals, one assist), and Carly Thompson and Lexie Sharp (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point performances.

Sharp collected a game-high seven draws, while Katie Thompson added five. Defensively, E-town got three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls from senior Kirstin Quilty, and Abby Kopytko made eight saves in the cage.

Though the Blue and Gray came up a game shy of returning to the postseason, it was a memorable season nonetheless. Prior to Saturday's game, Elizabethtown took time to recognize the accomplishments of its five seniors: Jessica Battaglia, Quilty, Courtney Shaffer, Carly Thompson and Katie Thompson.

Katie Thompson, a two-time All-Landmark honoree, ended her career as the Blue Jays' all-time leader in assists (136), ground balls (205) and draw controls (201). The Havre de Grace, Maryland native also ranks second in caused turnovers (128) and seventh in points (223). Just this spring, Thompson set single-season records in ground balls (67), caused turnovers (45) and draw controls (86), while tying the single-season assists record (63) and posting the sixth most points with a career-high 93.

Carly Thompson will go down in the record books tied for fifth in career draw controls (126), sixth in shots (299), tied for seventh in goals (133) and 10th in points (185).

Quilty started 58 games in four seasons, Shaffer played in more than 40 contests and Battaglia appeared in 31, while also spending time as a reserve goalie during her freshman season.
