Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Scranton uses second-half surge to get by Blue Jays

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team held a second-half lead over Scranton in Saturday's Landmark Conference contest, but Scranton outscored the Blue Jays 13-6 in the second half to come back, grab the lead, and hold on for a 19-13 final. Carly Thompson led E-town with a team-high six goals. Katie Thompson had a goal and six assists in the loss.

Scranton (7-6, 3-1 Landmark) put the Blue Jays down 4-1 over the first ten minutes, but Elizabethtown (6-7, 2-2 Landmark) worked its way back into the game. Kate Ziegler's 29th of the year tied things up at 5-5 with 9:32 left in the first half. E-town had trailed 5-2 with 14:11 to go before Carly Thompson scored twice and Ziegler's was the Jays' third in a row.

Thompson recorded her fourth of the first half to make it 6-6 after Elena Gallo's 36th of the year had the Royals back on top by a goal. Ziegler completed her hat trick with 4:15 left in a man-up situation that gave Elizabethtown its first lead of the game at 7-6. Neither team scored the remainder of the half and the Blue Jays led at the break.

Thompson, Mirthe Berends (7), and Madelyn Baker (46) accounted for three of the first four goals of the second half as E-town pulled ahead by three goals, 10-7, with 25:23 to go in the game. The Royals seemed to get stronger as the half went on. They put in five of the next six goals and Gallo's 38th of the season had Scranton back on top, 12-11.

Katie Thompson's 28th goal leveled the game at 12-12, but Scranton surged back in front with six straight to pull ahead 18-12 with less than six minutes to go. In a hole, Elizabethtown couldn't dig itself out. Carly Thompson's sixth goal of the game with 3:49 left made it 18-13, but it was the final goal of the game for the Jays.

Abby Kopytko had eight saves in 52 minutes. Jennifer Beihoff played the final eight minutes and made three saves for Elizabethtown. Lauren Devlin earned her first win of the season after taking over for starter Erin Putnam and playing the final 35:59 of the game.

Elizabethtown plays at Moravian on Wednesday, April 18, at 4 p.m.
