Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's lacrosse edges Widener

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Widener and the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team exchanged nine-goal halves in Tuesday morning's non-conference game in Florida. E-town scored one more goal in the second half than the Pride did in the first as the Blue Jays hung on for a one-goal, 14-13 win. Katie Thompson led Elizabethtown with five goals.

There were four ties in the first half, at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4. Elizabethtown (3-2) would score, but Widener (1-3) would always counter.

Madelyn Baker scored her 14th of the season on a free position attempt to give the Blue Jays the 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Kristi Rohrer scored a free position goal of her own and the game was knotted at 1-1 with just under 25 minutes left in the first half.

E-town had a chance to regrab the lead on another free position, but goalie Katie Hayes saved the shot and Rohrer picked up the ground ball and went the other way. At the other end, Abby Koptyko stopped Kaylee Horchak's shot to keep the game at level terms.

A Widener turnover led to an extra offensive possession for E-town and Carly Thompson cashed in. Emily Garvin found Thompson for the goal, her 12th of the season and first of four goals in the game. 32 seconds later, Caroline Kelley scored after the Pride claimed the draw control. It was Kelley's eighth of the season.

Kate Ziegler and Carly Thompson recorded goals for Elizabethtown, but Meg Steffney and Kelly Lynch answered, respectively.

Over the final 7:16 of the first half, the Jays scored five times to open up a 9-4 lead going into halftime. Carly (2) and Katie Thompson (2) accounted for four of the five and Baker scored a second free position goal with 10 seconds on the clock before the half.

Elizabethtown and Widener traded goals again to start the second half as E-town maintained the five-goal advantage. After Kelley made it 12-7, the Pride added another five goals to create the fifth tie of the game, at 12-12, with 6:50 remaining.

Katie Thompson scored a man-up after Widener was assessed a yellow card. Carly Thompson provided the assist. Garvin provided a two-goal lead with 2:20 to go with her fifth of the season.

It was enough as Horchak tallied from the free position with 1:38 left in the game. Rohrer grabbed the final draw control of the game, but a turnover put possession back into the sticks of Elizabethtown and the Jays cleared and ran out the clock to escape Florida with a second straight win and third of the season.

Katie Thompson had a game-high five goals and seven points. Carly Thompson had four goals and Baker also had a hat trick. Lynch and Kelley both recorded hat tricks for Widener. Kopytko made eight saves while Hayes had 17 stops for the Pride.
