Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Blue Jays take off in second half for third straight win

READING, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team had never lost to Alvernia in eight all-time meetings going into Tuesday afternoon's non-conference matchup. The Blue Jays extended that unbeaten streak to nine after outscoring the Golden Wolves 11-4 in the second half to win their third straight game, 17-9. Katie Thompson led E-town with five goals and four assists.

Taylor Dorrin scored her first goal of the season for the first goal of the game Tuesday, the only lead of the game for Alvernia (0-3). The Golden Wolves held the lead for a matter of minutes before Emily Garvin tied the game at 1-1, taking the first of Katie Thompson's four assists for the tally.

Mirthe Berends gave Elizabethtown (4-2) a 2-1 lead after Katie Thompson caused a turnover at the other end of the field. Jesse Sartor found Berends for her second of the season.

The Golden Wolves were level after Alyson Keene scored on a free position to tie the game at 2-2, the second tie of the contest. Katie Thompson grabbed the ensuing draw control and at 16:55, scored her first of five to give the lead back to Elizabethtown. She doubled the Jays' lead to 4-2 1:36 later.

Thompson's hat trick goal made it 6-3 with 10:01 left in the first half. Alvernia held the Blue Jays scoreless the remainder of the half while putting up a pair of goals to go into halftime down just 6-5.

Elizabethtown really took hold of the game in the second half and spent most of the final 30 minutes with possession of the ball. Of the 16 draw controls in the second half, the Blue Jays won 13 of them and outscored Alvernia 11-4.

Rachel Judge did tie the game for a third time, at 6-6, for the first goal of the second half, but from draw control that followed, it was E-town's game.

In a three and a half minute span, Katie Thompson, Kate Ziegler, and Madelyn Baker each scored for the Jays, who moved ahead 9-6. Ziegler and Baker's goals were both man-up goals. It was Ziegler's ninth of the year and Baker's 18th.

After the Golden Wolves got within 12-8, Elizabethtown rolled off four straight goals in four minutes to take a commanding 16-8 lead. Berends, Ziegler, and Baker (2) helped E-town double the lead. Garvin scored a few minutes later, her second of the game.

Abby Kopytko made three saves in 40:15. Jennifer Beihoff played the final 19:45 and made two saves for the Jays. Katie Thompson had a game-high nine points with five goals and four assists. Baker (4) and Ziegler (3) each had hat tricks.

Elizabethtown remains on the road and will play at Kean on Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m.
