Blue Jays held in check at Kean

UNION, N.J. -- Kean scored four times in the first five minutes and the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team couldn't recover in an 18-6 non-conference loss to the Cougars on Saturday. Madelyn Baker and Katie Thompson each had two goals for E-town.

Brittany Ballack scored 38 seconds into the game to put Kean (5-0) up early, but Katie Thompson recorded her 19th of the season exactly a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. The Cougars scored the next three to jump ahead 4-1 five minutes into Saturday's bout.

Baker scored her first of two in the game on a free position, her team-leading 21st of the season, to cut the deficit in half. After Lexie Sharp won the draw control and gave Elizabethtown (4-3) possession, Baker had a shot stopped by Nikki Apostolopoulos. A foul was called and the Cougars' goalie was put behind Baker, who was lined up straight on from the open net. The whistle sounded to restart play and Baker rocketed a shot into the goal before the defenders could step in front to attempt to block her shot.

Kean grabbed the next four goals to open up the game, 8-2, after Emily Stasuk scored with 16:35 left in the first half. Thompson stopped the run with her second of the game to make it 8-3. The Cougars led 12-3 at the break.

Baker had one of the Jays' three second-half goals. Mirthe Berends registered her fourth of the season with 8:59 to go and Jesse Sartor scored her third of the season, unassisted, with 3:28 remaining.

Both teams took 26 shots and put 21 on goal. Apostolopoulos made 15 saves for the Cougars. Abby Kopytko had three saves for the Blue Jays. Jennifer Beihoff played the final 16:43 of the game for E-town, her fourth appearance of the season.

Elizabethtown will host Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, March 21, at Wolf Field for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup with the Dutchmen.
