Katie Thompson sets single-game assist record as Blue Jays roll over River Hawks

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Katie Thompson set up Elizabethtown's first six goals Saturday afternoon on her way to a program single-game record 10 assists in the Blue Jays' 19-11 Landmark Conference victory over Susquehanna at Wolf Field.

Madelyn Baker put the Blue Jays on the board 61 seconds into the game and freshman Kate Ziegler sandwiched a pair of goals around two from Carly Thompson as the hosts raced out to a five-goal lead in the opening six minutes.

Katie Thompson had a hand in E-town's first nine goals. The senior midfielder assisted on her sixth straight goal goal, twin sister Carly's hat trick tally, at 23:30, before scoring her lone goal just over three minutes later.

The Blue Jays' lead continued to grow behind Katie Thompson's playmaking abilities. She assisted on Carly's fourth goal at 18:19 and found Mirthe Berends at 10:53 for her seventh and eighth assists of the first half and a 9-3 advantage.

Following two more goals from Baker, Katie Thompson tied Leigh Anne Flounlacker's 2013 single-game record nine assists with a helper on Ziegler's third goal of the game.

Elizabethtown (5-3, 1-0 Landmark) would take its largest lead of the first half, 14-5, in the last minute when Emily Garvin scored her eighth of the year, unassisted.

Katie Thompson wasted little time in becoming the only player in program history to record 10 assists in a game. The Thompson-to-Thompson connection worked flawlessly for the fifth time against the River Hawks (1-4, 0-1) when Carly hit the twine less than two minutes into the second.

The Blue Jays lead reached 11 in the second half, but the game never really felt in doubt after the home team's quick start.

Baker, Carly Thompson and Ziegler supplied more than 83 percent of the Jays' goals on Saturday, each finishing with five. Ziegler established a new career-high for goals in a game, while Baker matched hers.

Katie Thompson's day may have been defined by her passing --she also moved within two assists of 100 for her career-- but she excelled elsewhere, too. Thompson and Lexie Sharp collected a game-high eight draw controls, an area the Blue and Gray dominated 22-10. Thompson led all players with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Elizabethtown buried the River Hawks in the first half with a 28-8 shot advantage and extended that to 44-21 by the final horn.

Gabi Toohey had a hat trick for the visitors, while teammates Kathrina DeMaio and Brooke Klair both finished with two goals and an assist.

Susquehanna goalie Libby Dex turned aside 12 Blue Jay shots. Abby Kopytko made six saves for Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays will make up their game against Lebanon Valley --snowed out last Wednesday by Winter Storm Toby-- on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on Wolf Field.
