LVC holds off Jays; Katie Thompson records 100th career assist

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Two days removed from setting Elizabethtown's single-game assist record, senior Katie Thompson became just the second Blue Jay with 100 career helpers.

Thompson finished with four assists on the afternoon, but it was her second --on a Madelyn Baker goal at 12:47 of the second half-- that put her over the century mark and seven away from tying the program's all-time record of 109.

Lebanon Valley, which opened the game with six unanswered goals, held off the Blue Jays late comeback for a 13-9 win at Wolf Field on Monday.

Makenzie Kelley scored twice during the Dutchmen's (5-3) spurt at the outset, which left E-town to play catch up the rest of the way.

Freshman Kate Ziegler converted back-to-back free position attempts and Emily Garvin scored a man-down goal just as an E-town (5-4) yellow card expired with 1:06 left in the first half, as the Blue and Gray slowly crept back to within 7-3.

The visitors were able to strengthen their lead on three straight goals to start the second. Veronica Venezia's eighth of the year and two from Emma Jones put LVC up 10-4 with 20 minutes to play.

The Blue Jays made it interesting with Katie Thompson leading the way. The Havre de Grace, Md., product assisted on four consecutive Elizabethtown goals and pulled her team within 12-9 on a free position goal at the 3:43 mark, before Jones put it away for the Dutchmen in the final minute.

Lebanon Valley got off 12 more shots (32-21) than the Blue Jays, in a game that was nearly even in every other way. Ground balls were split 20-20 and draw controls 12-12. While the Jays committed one more turnover, they also got two more stops in the cage thanks to an 11-save performance from Abby Kopytko.

Thompson, who had 10 assists in a win over Susquehanna last Saturday and was named Landmark Offensive Athlete of the Week earlier Monday, has Kelsea Kozak's career assists record in her sights. With a five-point day against LVC, she's only 17 points shy of 200 in her career.

Baker and Ziegler each had hat tricks and have established themselves as go-to threats on offense for coach Danielle Taylor. For Baker, it was her seventh hat trick of the season. Ziegler has five and both players have produced eight goals in their last two games.

LVC's Jones added seven draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls to her four-goal day. Venezia also had five points (two goals, three assists), Kirsten Bannan (two goals, two assists) collected four, defender Jen Eck caused four turnovers and goalie Leah Franklin made nine saves.

Elizabethtown travels to Goucher on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Blue Jays will be looking for a 2-0 start in Landmark Conference play.
