Knight, Snyder enjoy career days against Swarthmore

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Anthony Knight and Brennan Snyder provided plenty of offense Friday, but even their monstrous performances weren't enough to subdue Swarthmore's fast start. The Garnet scored 10 runs in the first three innings and held on for a 16-12 win over Elizabethtown at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium.

Snyder smacked a two-run triple during the Blue Jays' three-run seventh and blasted a two-run shot to deep center in a four-run ninth on his way to career-highs of four hits and six RBIs.

The Blue Jays (5-10) trailed 12-4 after the fifth, but scored eight runs over the last four innings.

Had Swarthmore not scored four runs in the top of the ninth, Elizabethtown's answer in the bottom of the inning on a Colby Smith single, Nick Lorenz double and Snyder homer would have tied the game.

Catcher Anthony Knight's bat stayed red hot with a career-high five hits and three doubles in five at-bats. Knight, who also scored three times, is 11-for-16 (.688) with three straight multi-hit efforts, five doubles and nine runs scored during his current four-game hitting streak.

Snyder went 4-for-5 and came within a double of hitting for the cycle. Lorenz was also 4-for-5 with a team-high four runs scored and two RBIs.

Elizabethtown spotted the Garnet (13-5) three runs in the first, but quickly got two back. Colby Smith battled Ryan Warm for nine pitches before stepping into the Swarthmore starter's last offering and sending it over the left field fence for a solo homer --his second of the year.

Snyder later drove in Lorenz with a single, but Swarthmore answered with six in the second to make it a 9-2 game. Charles Levitt delivered the crushing blow with a grand slam for his fifth home run of the season.

Coach Adam Sheibley used eight different pitchers with mixed results. Anthony Cameron, Mason Abate and Cory Freedner combined for 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. Starter Justin Cherry was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on five hits.

Warm lasted five innings for the Garnet and did enough for the win, issuing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out a pair.

AJ Liu joined teammate Levitt with a home run on a blustery afternoon that saw the ball carrying well at Boyd Stadium. Designated hitter Jackson Roberts and center fielder Jared Gillen each had three hits and three RBIs for the Garnet, and Conor Elliott added three hits.

Swarthmore edged the Jays in hits 19-18. While Knight, Lorenz and Snyder combined for 13 of those, E-town also got two from Smith and Arley Shepherd, the latter registering his first career collegiate hits.

Elizabethtown wraps up its conference series against Scranton on Monday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
