Smith records 100th RBI, baseball drops doubleheader to Moravian

ASTON, Pa. -- Senior Colby Smith drove in his 100th career run in game two, but Elizabethtown's offense could never quite click as a whole Sunday afternoon when Moravian took both ends of a doubleheader from the Blue Jays by 6-1 and 15-2 scores at the MSI Sports Village.

GAME 1
Moravian 6, Elizabethtown 1

Anthony Lippy tried to hold the Greyhounds at bay as long as he could, but Moravian broke through for two runs in the third and made it 4-0 by the fifth before E-town finally got on the board.

The Blue Jays were unable to build any momentum against Hounds' starting pitcher Nicholas Mazzella, who threw a complete game three-hitter and struck out seven.

Lippy also went the distance and struck out seven, but Moravian's lineup produced 11 hits in securing its first Landmark victory.

Moravian (6-9, 1-3 Landmark), which was swept by conference favorite Catholic last weekend, played small ball to near perfection. All of the runs against Lippy came via singles or error, and the Hounds also laid down three successful sacrifice bunts.

Brennan Snyder's RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth broke up Mazzella's shutout, but Mike Mittl hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh to increase Moravian's lead to five.

Snyder also doubled for the Jays (3-8, 0-1), but he was one of only three players to record a hit for the Blue and Gray along with Anthony Knight (double) and Derek Manning (single).

Four of Moravian's first five batters in the lineup finished with two hits.

GAME 2
Moravian 15, Elizabethtown 2

Colby Smith cracked his first home run of the season off Moravian ace Rhett Jacoby in the second for his 100th career RBI, but the Greyhounds exploded for seven runs in the fifth and ran away with seven more in in the eighth.

Jacoby wasn't overpowering, notching just three strikeouts, but he kept the Jays off balance. Smith's round-tripper to lead off the second wound up being Elizabethtown's (3-9, 0-2) only extra base hit and one of just three against the junior righty in seven innings.

E-town starter Mike Garvey's pitch count started to climb early, though he yielded only one run on three hits and fanned four over the first four innings.

Things came apart for the Blue Jays in the fifth. Moravian (7-9, 2-3) sent 11 hitters to the plate, where it turned four hits, a sac fly and four walks into seven runs and a comfortable 8-1 lead.

Elizabethtown moved quickly through the next two innings, but Moravian catcher Chase Rogers belted a shot over the wall in left to start the eighth and Austin Markowski capped the inning with a three-run homer as the Hounds took advantage of four hits and three errors to go up 15-1.

The Blue Jays, who had three hits in the first four innings, went the next four without one. Taggart Hess singled to start the bottom of the ninth and later scored on Smith's RBI single. Smith is the 11th player in program history to record 100 career RBIs and with his second of the day, moved into a tie for 10th all-time with Rick Lutz (101).

Jacoby earned the win with seven solid innings for the Hounds. Garvey left in the fifth after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits and five strikeouts.

Hess and Smith were each 2-for-4 for the Jays. Moravian second baseman Ian Csencsits had a game-high three hits and Rogers knocked in four.
