Spartans pull away from Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Visiting York (Pa.) broke open a close game with seven runs over the final two innings, sending Elizabethtown to its fourth straight loss, 14-5, at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium on Monday afternoon.

A six-hit second inning helped the Blue Jays overcome an early 4-0 deficit and tie the game. James Kantner, Colby Smith, Derek Manning and Brennan Snyder each contributed an RBI single in the frame.

Unfortunately for the hosts, it was the only real momentum they built with the bats. Spartan (7-6) pitchers Bobby Kuehn and Ben Demchak limited the Blue Jays to one run on four hits the rest of the way.

York took the lead for good in the fourth when a defensive lapse from E-town allowed two runs to score. An inning later, catcher Garrett Southern knocked in Christian Bilan to make it 7-4.

No matter who the Blue Jays (3-7) threw at York's lineup, the visitors found a way. All nine batters had at least one hit. The Spartans' 1-4 hitters combined to go 14-for-23 with three doubles, a triple and eight runs batted in.

Grant Oberholtzer, Zach Hossler and Bilan all went 4-for-6 for York. Oberholtzer scored four runs and Bilan drove in four while coming within a home run of the cycle.

Elizabethtown wouldn't score again until its final at-bats, when freshman JT Thompson hit a sacrifice fly for his first career RBI that scored fellow rookie Arley Shepherd.

York got to E-town starter Mike Garvey for seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits in five innings. Garvey struck out three in his second start of the season.

Freshman Joseph Sarich fired two scoreless innings and Ben Thorpe got through the eighth unscathed for the Blue and Gray.

Kuehn, who came in with a team-leading 2.53 ERA, improved to 3-0 for the Spartans. Outside of the second inning, the junior southpaw held E-town to no runs on two hits over 4.1 innings. Demchak pitched the final 3.2, giving up a pair of hits and striking out six for his second save.

Though the Blue Jays finished with 10 hits, only Manning and Nick Lorenz had more than one, as both players collected a pair in four at-bats.

Weather permitting, the Jays will play at Franklin & Marshall Thursday at 3:30 p.m., before returning home for a three-game Landmark Conference series against Moravian on Saturday and Sunday.
