Penn State Harrisburg skirts by Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown spent eight innings trying to solve Penn State Harrisburg pitching, but the Blue Jays' eventual breakthrough wasn't enough. Derek Manning and Brennan Snyder drove home runs in the bottom of the eighth to give E-town a 2-1 lead, but the Lions scored two in the top of the ninth to capture a 3-2 victory.

The loss spoiled Elizabethtown's home opener at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium, though starting pitcher Anthony Lippy was again lights out going seven strong and striking out seven while allowing just one run --on Miguel Torres' fourth-inning single.

The Blue Jays (3-6) could only muster three hits through seven frames, but got a rally going in the eighth. Newcomer Taggart Hess singled to start the inning and went to second on Colby Smith's sacrifice bunt. Manning took the first pitch he saw from the Lions' Brendan Riotto into left field for a single that scored Hess with E-town's first run of the game. Snyder followed with a triple to the fence in center to give the Jays a 2-1 lead.

Torres roped an RBI triple over the head of center fielder Hess with one out in the ninth to knot the game at two and the Lions went back in front on Scott Angstadt Jr.'s two-out pinch-hit single to right. A perfect relay from James Kantner and Riley McGinley kept Penn State Harrisburg's lead to one, as they got pinch-runner Ryan Kennington at the plate for the final out.

James Kaplan, who came on to get the final out in the eighth, shut the door on a second potential E-town comeback, retiring the side in order to earn the victory.

Brandon Riggs went the first five for the Lions (11-4), holding the Blue Jays scoreless on three hits allowed and five strikeouts.

The Blue Jays' Lippy took a no-decision, but lowered his season earned run average to 1.91. He's only given up one earned run in his last 23.2 innings dating back to the season opener against Arcadia on Feb. 26.

Hess had the only multi-hit game for the hosts, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Snyder accounted for the team's only extra-base hit.

Of Penn State Harrisburg's nine hits, six came from Torres and Casey Winters, who were each 3-for-4.

Elizabethtown will face York (Pa.) at Boyd Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 3:30.
