Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Juniata holds off women's basketball

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- A first quarter lead dissipated by the second quarter and after trailing by double digits in the second half, a comeback attempt by the Elizabethtown College women's basketball fell just short at Juniata on Thursday in Landmark Conference action. Rescheduled to a day later due to wintry weather, the Eagles put enough distance between themselves and the Blue Jays in the middle two quarters to hang on 64-59. Ashley Reynolds led E-town with a team-high 17 points.

Mikayla Ruth and Reynolds, two of three players in double figures for Elizabethtown (12-9, 6-5 Landmark) on the night, got the Blue Jays out to a 4-0 lead on the road. Juniata (19-3, 8-3 Landmark) responded with an 8-0 run to charge into the lead. In a quarter of runs, the Jays had an 8-0 run over a two-minute span that took them into the final minute of the first ahead 15-10. Ruth was responsible for half of the points during the spurt. Abby Beyer hit a jumper to cut it to a one-point deficit. After Emma Powell recorded a block on the defensive end, she took a Marissa Emlet pass and went to the hoop for two to give E-town a one-point lead. Ruth had the final four points, including a fast break layup with 55 seconds to go to make it 15-10 in favor of the Blue Jays. Veronica Cosmopolis hit a three on the final possession for the Eagles.

Juniata reclaimed the lead at 9:12 of the second quarter and maintained it for the entirety of the quarter. Elizabethtown kept it at a one-possession game until Rachael Anstine's jumper made it a four-point game. Makayla Carles' trey increased it to seven on the Eagles' next possession. It would be the largest deficit E-town would face in the second. Beyer hit a pair of free throws to take the teams to halftime with Juniata in front, 32-27.

Reynolds had the first two baskets of the third for the Blue Jays, each making it a three-point game as Juniata continued to lead the way. Ruth got it within one, but after another Anstine jumper, Beyer knotted up the game at 36-36 at 7:40 of the third quarter. From there, JC went on a 7-0 run to establish a seven-point lead in just over a minute's worth of time.

A few missed shots and a few turnovers allowed Juniata to begin to stretch the lead into double figures, to as many as 13 with under two minutes to play in the third. Reynolds and Powell scored the final six points of the quarter for Elizabethtown, though Haley Myers hit a last-second shot for the Eagles to keep E-town down ten heading to the fourth, 54-44.

Juniata led 62-47 with 5:07 remaining in the game, but the Blue Jays chipped away at the lead and got back into single digits with 2:32 to go. Veronica Christ had a pair of fast break buckets to cut it to five, 62-57, with 49 seconds on the clock. The Jays would run out of time, however. Emma Hoesman hit two foul shots with a second left for the final score, 64-59.

Reynolds led all scorers with a game-high 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Powell had 13 points and finished 7-of-8 from the foul line. Ruth added 12 points and Christ had a team-high five steals. Four players for Juniata were in double digits, including a team-high from Morgan Instone.

Elizabethtown will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, February 10, when Goucher visits Thompson Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
