Women's basketball handles Goucher on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had one of its better shooting performances of the season Saturday against Goucher at Thompson Gymnasium. E-town shot 46 percent from the field as a team and on Senior Day, handled the Gophers comfortably with a 78-33 win. Rachel Liszkiewicz had her first career double-double, tying her career high in points and setting a new career high in rebounds and assists.

Seniors Emma Hoesman and Liszkiewicz accounted for the first ten points of the game Elizabethtown (13-9, 7-5 Landmark). Hoesman opened the game with a trey and her senior teammate made it back-to-back threes for the Blue Jays. An Ashley Reynolds steal led to a fast break lay-in for Liszkiewicz and E-town was out 8-0 through the first 1:06. Nicole Wolard got Goucher (0-23, 0-12 Landmark) on the board with a basket down low. Wolard added to her double-double total on the season with another one. She recorded a game-high 13 points for the Gophers and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Abby Beyer and Veronica Christ came in off the bench and combined for the next ten points for the Jays. Beyer hit a pair of treys in a 27-second span before two straight layups for Christ. E-town led 20-6 with 2:50 left in the first quarter as the lineups continued to change throughout the game for EC. Six different players registered points in the first ten minute period for Elizabethtown.

Mya Lewis' layup started off the second quarter and Goucher had the deficit down to 12, 23-11, but Hoesman responded with her second trey of the game after Brittany Ritter found the senior for the open attempt from beyond the arc. Ritter hit a pair of foul shots later in the quarter that extended the lead to 18 for the second time in the second quarter.

Jill Freeman's jumper with 37 seconds left in the half lifted the advantage to 22, the largest of the half. Lauryn Mitchell provided the assist on the play. Nailah Jones' jumper with 16 seconds to go cut it back to 20. It was a 41-21 game at halftime.

Hoesman found Reynolds down low for the hoop and the harm. Reynolds swished her free throw attempt, then after a Goucher turnover, Jenny Welch took a feed from Reynolds and connected on a basket in the paint, two of Elizabethtown's 36 points in the paint and 23 off turnovers.

E-town had its best shooting quarter in the third, going 9-for-17 (53 percent) from the floor. They outscored the Gophers 24-4 in the third to blow open the game. It was 65-25 by the end of the third after Christ's fast break layup coming off Beyer's block. Marissa Emlet collected the rebound then sent Christ out on the break with 1:23 remaining.

Welch, Freeman, and Liszkiewicz all provided four points each for the Blue Jays in the fourth to close out the game. Liszkiewicz had ten rebounds coming into the final period of play before grabbing another five and finish with a career-best 15 boards. Her point total went from seven to 11 to get the senior her first career double-double. She also added a career high seven assists in the game.

The conference win moves Elizabethtown up to third with a one-game lead on Catholic, who lost today and dropped to 6-6. The Blue Jays and Cardinals meet at Thompson Gymnasium this coming Wednesday, February 14, at 7 p.m. for a pivotal Landmark contest. Catholic defeated E-town earlier in the season.
