Blue Jays win battle of the birds in overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Lydia Lawson returned from a two-game absence to lead the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team to a 66-61 overtime win over Catholic on Wednesday night to clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs. Lawson had a game-high 20 points, including 13 in the first half.

Veronica Christ had a hand in the first three baskets for Elizabethtown (14-9, 8-5 Landmark). Her steal on Catholic's first possession led to the game's first points after Lawson took a pass from Christ and sank her first shot of the game. A minute later, Christ hit a jumper from the baseline on Lawson's assist. The Cardinals turned it over for a second time in three possessions as Lawson created the turnover. At the other end, Emma Hoesman received a cross court pass from Christ and hit an open jumper from the left wing.

Mollie Reynolds ended the Jays' 6-0 run to start the game with a driving layup. Reynolds and Briana Bull each had 14 points to tie for a team-high for Catholic (15-9, 6-7 Landmark).

The Cardinals outscored E-town 8-5 over the final 3:31 of the first quarter to cut the deficit to one by the start of the second.

CC Mooney's bucket down low tied the game up at 14-14 and Catholic grabbed its first lead at 16-15 just over a minute later. A spell of three pointers were traded as Abby Beyer, Payton Smith, and Hoesman all hit treys. Hoesman's put E-town back in front 22-21 with 5:41 remaining in the second quarter.

CUA converted an Elizabethtown turnover into points for Reynolds that put Catholic ahead by three with 3:30 to go before the half. From that point, the Blue Jays went on an 11-1 run to close out the half. Beyer was fouled in the act of shooting a three for the first of two times in the game. The shot didn't go, but all three of her ensuing foul shots did. That tied things up at 27-27.

While the Cardinals struggled offensively, Lawson scored the next six points for the Jays and the lead grew to six, 33-27, after Lawson went coast to coast and finished with a left-handed kiss off the glass. Marissa Emlet beat the halftime buzzer with a good jumper. The ball went in to Emma Powell in the high post. The freshman pivoted around and found an open Emlet, who sank the jumper to send Elizabethtown into the locker room ahead by seven, 35-28.

Lawson went right at Catholic to start the third. Sydney Poindexter got the ball inside for a layup to start the scoring, but on two straight possessions, Lawson got to the hoop for two layups to add to her scoring total. Christ's jumper made it an 11-point game and forced the Cardinals to call a timeout.

By the end of the third, Catholic had gotten it back into single digits and Elizabethtown went into the fourth ahead by eight, 46-38.

The once eight-point lead shrank to four over the first 2:25, but Beyer came through with a timely four-point play. Out on the right wing, Beyer caught the ball and right in rhythm, sent up a shot from beyond the arc, swished it home, and took a bump from the defender, who was called for the foul. Beyer sank the free throw and the eight-point lead was restored.

The Cardinals began to ratchet up the defensive pressure, which helped them chip away at the lead. Bull's layup with 3:40 left in the third made it a two-point game. Once again, a Beyer trey provided some room for the Blue Jays. Her three with 2:19 to go had E-town up seven, 55-48.

Catholic didn't go away, however. Down the stretch, Poindexter hit two foul shots and her layup with 19 seconds left got the Cardinals within one at 55-54. An Elizabethtown turnover with 16 seconds left led to a go-ahead layup with six seconds remaining. An E-town timeout allowed the home team to advance the ball up the court. Samantha Cowan blocked a game-winning layup attempt with two seconds showing. The ball had gone out of bounds, and on the inbounds play for the Blue Jays, Mikayla Ruth was fouled in the act of shooting with less than a second on the clock. She split a pair at the line and the game went into overtime.

Christ had four of the first six E-town points as the Jays led by four midway through the overtime period. Late in the OT, Ruth's layup on Beyer's assist put the Blue Jays ahead by four, 65-61, with 28 seconds remaining. Catholic then turned it over, which wound up in the hands of Lawson. Lawson helped seal the game at the foul line and Elizabethtown clinched a spot in the Landmark playoffs with the overtime victory.

Lawson's game-high 20 points came on 8-for-11 shooting and a four-spot at the foul line. Beyer had 16 points with four treys and a 4-for-4 showing at the charity stripe. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Lawson, Emlet, and Christ each had three assists in the win.

Elizabethtown closes out the regular season at Susquehanna. A win over the River Hawks would give the Blue Jays the third seed and a trip to Juniata the following Wednesday. Saturday's game at Susquehanna is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
