Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball runs away with regular season finale at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Needing a win to secure the third seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team hit a season-high 11 treys and nearly shot 40 percent from the field while scoring 20 or more points in three of the four quarters of Saturday's 81-56 win at Susquehanna to close out the regular season. Veronica Christ tied for a game-high with 23 points.

Coming off an overtime win on Wednesday against Catholic, it was going to be important for Elizabethtown (15-9, 9-5 Landmark) to get off to a good start on the road. Mikayla Ruth had the Blue Jays' first five points with two jump shots, one inside the arc and one outside. Christ hit one of her five three pointers a possession after Ruth's first three and E-town was out 8-2 in the first two minutes.

Ruth and Christ continued to torch Susquehanna (11-13, 6-8 Landmark) on their own. The two combined to score the first 19 points for Elizabethtown. Back-to-back three pointers by Christ made it 19-7. Emma Hoesman became the first player other than Ruth and Christ to score for EC as her jumper made it a 12-point game with 3:54 to go in the first. Christ's jumper a minute later increased the lead to 14. Christ and Ruth totaled 21 of the 25 first-quarter points for the Jays and they led 25-14 after the first.

The River Hawks closed the gap in the second quarter. Elizabethtown led by 12, 30-18, but held E-town scoreless while going on an 8-0 run to get back within four points with 3:51 left in the half. SU fed Courtney Adams, who took a team-high 15 shots in the first two quarters. She had a team-high 10 first-half points and helped get the River Hawks with a few buckets.

Emma Powell had a four-point run of her own to get it back to an eight-point game. Lydia Lawson added a jumper on top of Powell's four points and the advantage was back to double digits. Bailey Trell hit a three as time expired in the half to make it 36-29 at the break.

E-town was even stronger in the second half, posting 25 and 20 points in the third and fourth quarters and shooting 42 percent. Christ and Marissa Emlet both reached double figures in the second half while Ruth and Ashley Reynolds each added seven.

The teams traded baskets in the third with each team scoring on the first two possessions for their side. Adams got Susquehanna within five, but Christ tracked down an offensive rebound on the next possession for Elizabethtown and wound up draining another three. The River Hawks never got closer than eight, after Christ's three, for the remainder of the game.

With the outside shots falling, it opened up a little more space around the basket for Reynolds and Ruth. E-town had 12 points in the paint in the third quarter alone and 22 for the game.

It was Emlet's turn in the fourth quarter. She had the first eight points for Elizabethtown as the lead ran up to 19, 69-50. Adams added another layup, but Abby Beyer knocked down a three 20 seconds later and the Jays were up by 20. Beyer found Emlet down low with a bounce pass for an easy layup a possession later.

Lauryn Mitchell hit three free throws late in the game, her first points in a Blue Jays' uniform and EC ran out the clock for the 81-56 win.

Christ shot 9-for-19 and registered the first 20-point game of her career after tying for a game-high with 23 points. It also snapped her out of a six-game double-digit scoreless drought. Ruth added 17 points and hit all three of her attempts from beyond the arc. Emlet had 13 points off the bench on 5-for-7 shooting. Adams led Susquehanna with 23 points.

As the third seed in the Landmark Conference, Elizabethtown will travel to face the second seed, Juniata, on Wednesday in a semifinal matchup in Huntingdon, Pa. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
