Big second half leads Juniata over women's basketball in Landmark semifinal

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Veronica Christ helped the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team to a lead at halftime of Wednesday night's Landmark Conference semifinal. 15 of Christ's team-high 20 points came in the first two quarter and E-town led 33-31 at the break, but a strong second half by the home team saw Juniata advance to Saturday's Landmark Conference championship game after a 78-55 win over the Blue Jays.

Christ had five of the first seven points for Elizabethtown (15-10). Rachael Anstine's fast break layup had Juniata (22-4) up by three before Marissa Emlet found Christ for the hoop and the harm. Christ sank her free throw and tied the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

There were two more ties and three lead changes the remainder of the quarter. Abby Beyer knocked down a three, but Haley Myers responded for the Eagles with a trey of her own. Later, Emma Powell took a pass from Lydia Lawson on the break to return the lead to E-town. Veronica Cosmopolis nixed that lead and tied things up at 12-12 with a bucket of her own. Dani Atkinson put Juniata back in front a possession later and the second-seeded Eagles took a 17-15 lead into the second quarter. Mikayla Ruth sank a three with four seconds to go in the first to make it a two-point game.

Much of the second quarter was spent played in a one-possession game as the lead went back and forth between the two sides.

Juniata managed to get out to a four-point advantage with 2:28 to go in the half, but Rachel Liszkiewicz and Christ erased that in two possession's time. Emma Hoesman provided the assists on the two buckets. Liszkiewicz used Hoesman's third straight assist to give Elizabethtown a slim 30-28 lead. Christ sent the Blue Jays into the locker room with the lead after she connected on a three-pointer with four ticks left. Hoesman had four straight dimes to end the first half.

The second half belonged to Juniata, who held Elizabethtown to just 6-for-26 shooting from the field and 2-for-13 from beyond the arc. The Eagles, meanwhile, shot over 45 percent and nearly 50 percent from three-point range. Atkinson and Bethany Spencer were both in double figures in the second half alone.

Elizabethtown led by as many as six in the third quarter, but four straight makes by the Eagles, including a pair of treys, saw Juniata grab a four-point lead with less than five to go in the third. That lead blossomed to nine by the start of the fourth.

While the Jays' offense struggled, Juniata kept up its' hot shooting as the lead went into double figures. The Eagles utilized the momentum and carried it over the rest of the game and into Saturday's Landmark Championship matchup at top-seeded Scranton.

Christ led Elizabethtown with 20 points while Emlet grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Atkinson was one of three in double digits for Juniata, with 14. Spencer and Anstine each added 12 points for the Eagles. Juniata won the turnover battle and had 25 points off turnovers. The Eagles also crashed the glass, hauling down 14 offensive rebounds to supply 16 second chance points to the cause.
