Moravian gets better of women's basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Moravian got out ahead of the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team on Saturday in a Landmark Conference matchup at Johnston Hall and didn't look back in handing the Blue Jays a 74-57 loss. Emma Powell led E-town with a team-high 19 points.

Moravian (14-7, 4-6 Landmark) scored the first seven points of the game in the opening three minutes to grab a 7-0 lead before Mikayla Ruth broke the Jays' scoreless drought for two of her 15 points.

The Greyhounds went ahead as many as ten, 13-3, but Abby Beyer, Veronica Christ, and Marissa Emlet put Elizabethtown (12-8, 6-4 Landmark) on a 7-0 run of their own to get within three. Emlet's jumper with 2:22 left in the first quarter made it 13-10.

A cold shooting streak and a few turnovers allowed Moravian to pull ahead by double figures in the second. The Greyhounds turned E-town over 21 times, a season-high for the Blue Jays. Those turnovers were generated into 25 points for Moravian.

A Beyer three cut the deficit to eight, 26-18, with 5:08 left in the half, but Maddie Capuano answered with a three of her own to send the lead right back to double digits, which is where it stayed into halftime. Moravian led 38-26 at the break.

Powell was the Blue Jays' go-to scorer in the second half, scoring 17 of her 19 points over the final two quarters. Powell was 6-for-10 from the field and 5-for-6 at the foul line while the rest of the team was a combined 6-for-21 from the floor and 0-for-2 at the stripe.

The freshman had seven of Elizabethtown's 16 third-quarter points, but Moravian still led by 13 going into the fourth. Her layup cut it to ten, but Camille McPherson hit one of her four treys with 22 seconds remaining in the third to push the lead to 13.

Powell and Emlet initiated a quick surge at the start of the fourth quarter, combining for eight points and making it an 11-point game with 5:50 to go after Powell's steal and Emma Hoesman's assist to Emlet on the fast break.

It was as soon as Elizabethtown could get going that Moravian would respond to hold E-town at bay. The Greyhounds outscored the Jays each of the four quarters, including 19-15 in the fourth, to send EC to a 74-57 defeat.

Powell's 19 points were a season-high. Ruth had her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Emlet had ten off the bench for Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays will travel to face off with Juniata on Wednesday, February 7, in Huntingdon, Pa. for a 7 p.m. tip off.
