Women's lacrosse drops season opener to #7 Franklin & Marshall

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team knew it was in for a battle when No. 7 Franklin & Marshall College came to Wolf Field for Saturday's non-conference season opener for both squads. F&M scored the first 13 goals of the game with E-town getting three in the second half. The Diplomats ended up with a 17-3 win.

Paige Moriarty, who recorded her 300th point in the game for Franklin & Marshall (1-0), and Hannah Serling each had four goals. The two combined to score five consecutive goals for the Diplomats as they built up a 7-0 lead in the first ten minutes. F&M made it tough on Elizabethtown (0-1), forcing nine failed clears in the first half.

With Franklin & Marshall serving a penalty for an illegal substitution, Carly Thompson tried getting E-town on the board, but her shot was saved by goalie Danielle Harrington. Madelyn Baker had a free position attempt a few minutes later go right of the cage as the Blue Jays began to see more offensive opportunities as they settled into the game.

Lexie Sharp and Katie Thompson both had shots saved by Harrington, who kept her shutout intact through the half.

Moriarty scored her fourth of the game to start the second half, but the Jays got the next two. Baker scored her first of the season on a free position at 19:56. A little over two minutes later, Carly Thompson got into the critical scoring area, beating her defender and getting in on goal. Her shot found the twine to make it 13-2.

Baker picked up her second of the game with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Mirthe Berends' shot was blocked as there were a number of bodies around the goal. Baker scooped up the loose ball and got in on net for the tally.

Harrington made six saves for F&M and her replacement, Julia McKay, had one. Abby Kopytko made 10 saves for Elizabethtown.

Elizabethtown will host Hood on Wednesday, February 21, at 4 p.m.
