Salisbury gets away from Blue Jays in fourth

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A close game to start the fourth quarter, Salisbury got away from the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Friday evening at Thompson Gymnasium and snapped the Blue Jays' 16-game non-conference home win streak with a 61-52 win. Lydia Lawson led the Jays with a team-high 20 points.

Things were looking up for Elizabethtown (4-4), who looked poised to put Salisbury (6-2) away early. The Blue Jays were up 11-3 with 1:45 left in the first and held the Sea Gulls to only 3-for-10 from the field. Four of the five E-town starters contributed to the 8-2 run to start the game with each player scoring once. They were up 10-2 after Roni Isenberg's second bucket from inside after Marissa Emlet grabbed one of her five offensive rebounds and dished it off to the freshman forward for the hoop.

Salisbury managed to close the game to six points by the start of the second quarter after Kaylyn French's layup with four seconds to go in the first. French tied Lawson for the game-high with 20 points.

Clare Marchese knocked down a three early in the second and coupled with Veronica Christ's jumper two possessions later, Elizabethtown had its biggest lead of the game, at nine, with 7:18 to go in the first half. Salisbury's 12-0 run over the next four minutes put the guests into the lead after Kaylee Otlowski's layup on the fast break. Rachel Christman quickly tied the game at 21-21 out of an E-town timeout, her lone three of the game.

The teams tied once more at 23-23, but the Sea Gulls produced the final seven points of the first half to take a 30-23 lead into halftime.

Down as many as 11 in the opening minutes of the third quarter, Lawson hit one of her career-high four treys to get the deficit back into single digits. Christ canned a three-pointer two possessions later, which came after one of Lawson's team-high three steals. The junior point guard passed off to Christ to record one of her game-high five assists. The run extended to 9-0 on Ruth's three provided by Lawson's assist and in a short span, it was 34-32 in favor of Salisbury.

Lawson cut it to one with another three, but the Sea Gulls didn't give up the lead as E-town continued to battle back. Otlowski hit a jumper with 1:45 to go in the quarter, but Lawson put up five of the final six points of the quarter to get the Blue Jays level at 45-45 going into the fourth.

Elizabethtown took the lead on Lawson's bucket, 49-47, but Salisbury jumped back in front and slowly began to pull away from the Jays as the quarter wore on. Lawson hit her final trey of the game to get her team within a basket at 54-52 with 4:31 to play, though the Gulls held E-town scoreless the rest of the way and extended the lead to nine with 13 seconds left.

Lawson's point total was her fourth straight in double figures and seventh time with 10 or more in eight games. Isenberg grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in a season-high 28 minutes. Emlet, the Landmark's third-leading rebounder, recorded 10 boards, her third consecutive game in double figure rebounds.

Elizabethtown will travel to Marywood next Saturday, December 15.
