Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Isenberg, Lawson pace women's basketball to double-digit win over Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team put forth numerous season highs after outpacing Marywood on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Individually, Roni Isenberg and Lydia Lawson each recorded season highs in points as the Blue Jays came out of Insalaco Arena with a 73-59 win.

Elizabethtown (5-4) was down early after the Pacers knocked down their first three shots of the game, two of which were three-pointers. The Jays also started 3-for-3 from the floor as Isenberg got off to a quick start, scoring four of E-town's first six points. Marissa Emlet led off the game with a made jumper on the first possession.

Marywood (4-6) got up by as many as nine, 17-8, with 4:36 to go in the first, but Isenberg sparked a 10-2 run for Elizabethtown over the next 3:51. Lawson's three tied the game at 19-19 with 37 seconds before the end of the first quarter. Marywood's Natasha Hessling connected inside with 12 seconds left as the home team took a two-point lead into the second.

A run by the Pacers to start the next quarter saw their lead bloom to seven points. Mikayla Ruth and Veronica Christ hit shots from the field, a three by Ruth and a jump shot by Christ, to bring the Blue Jays within a bucket. Though Marywood's Alyssa Olson completed the and-one play a possession after E-town got to within two, the tide would begin to shift in favor of the Jays.

Isenberg gave Elizabethtown their first lead since it was 2-0 at 34-32. Morgan Shamo's trey briefly put MU back in front, but Ruth and Emlet hit back-to-back shots on the next two possessions for EC and suddenly it was a two-possession game in favor of the Blue and Gray. Lawson found Emlet for a three with 38 seconds remaining before the half and the Blue Jays took that four-point lead into the break, ahead 39-35.

As the offense posted a season-high shooting percentage of .460, the defense was also doing its job. Elizabethtown forced 18 turnovers and committed a season-low eight. A third of those turnovers were forced in the third quarter alone and a four-point halftime lead grew to as many as 13 after Lawson registered of her game-high seven steals. She poked the ball away and the bounce went toward Christ. The sophomore scooped up the ball and in one motion, tossed it ahead to the speedy Lawson, who pulled away from the defender and in for the fast break layup. The Jays also had a season-high in team assists with 19.

Two baskets in first two minutes of the fourth had Marywood within six, but Lawson canceled out a made three by Aryah Aungst with one of her team-high three treys. Lawson and Isenberg combined for 10 of the 15 fourth-quarter points for the Jays. Ruth added five in the final period of play.

Lawson finished with a season-high 22 points and recorded 20 or more for the second straight game. Her seven steals tied a career-high and she tied her season-high in assists with six. Isenberg, one of four in double figures for E-town, had a season-best 18 points and, along with Ruth, had seven rebounds. Emlet grabbed a team-high eight boards. Christ added 13 points while Ruth had 12.

The Blue Jays will host Marymount (Va.) on Monday, December 17, at 6 p.m.
