Women's basketball falls short at Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa. -- Marissa Emlet secured a career-high 15 rebounds for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team, but it came in a losing effort after Cabrini extended its lead in the fourth quarter and wound up with a ten-point, 75-65, victory over the Blue Jays. Emlet and Lydia Lawson each had 16 points for E-town.

Elizabethtown (4-3) had the lead, 12-10, after Veronica Christ completed the and-one play by sinking her foul shot. It would end up being E-town's only lead of the game and was short-lived as Ashley Tutzauer sank a trey to put Cabrini (4-4) back in front. Tutzauer was one of two players in doubles figures for the Cavaliers in the first half.

Her shot also started off a 9-0 run for Cabrini that took them from down two points with 3:42 left in the first quarter to up seven, 19-12, with 1:32 left. Mikayla Ruth canned a three-pointer on one of Lawson's team-high six assists. The final four points of the quarter, though, went to the Cavaliers, who took a 23-15 lead into the second period of play.

Angie Hawkins and Emlet connected on the first two baskets of the second for the Blue Jays on consecutive possessions. Emlet's second of the two had Elizabethtown within six, 25-19. The Jays were 0-for-3 from the floor and turned it over twice over the next two and a half minutes before Emlet's third field goal of the quarter snapped the scoreless streak. The junior came up with the steal and took it down to the other end on the fast break for the layup.

Cabrini got up by as many as ten in the second, but Emlet and Hawkins finished out the quarter with a layup and a three to cut the deficit in half by the expiration of the first half. Christ found Hawkins for a three with 53 seconds to go and Elizabethtown went into the break down 33-28.

The teams played an evenly matched third quarter, each putting up 20 points apiece as the five-point non-conference matchup headed into the fourth quarter still within reach for the Blue Jays.

Christ hit from beyond the arc for the first points of the final period and it was only a two-point game. Kate Lannon answered for the Cavaliers with a three of her own. The lead, at five after Lannon's three, blossomed to as much as 12 with 3:12 to go. E-town didn't go away as Rachel Christman knocked down a three to get the game back within single digits.

Elizabethtown couldn't get any closer than eight points away as Cabrini managed to hold off any rally attempt and ended up with a ten-point victory.

Emlet grabbed 13 rebounds on the defensive end to go along with a pair of offensive boards. She also had a team-high four steals. Lawson hit on six free throws, a team-best. Christ was also in double figures for the Jays with 13 points and a pair of treys. Roni Isenberg pulled in eight rebounds. Cabrini had four in double figures led by Kate Lannon's 17. Lexi Edwards added 16 for the Cavs.

The Blue Jays will be back at Thompson Gymnasium on Friday, December 6, when they host Salisbury for a 6 p.m. matchup.
