NEW YORK --
Connor Moffatt collected season-highs of 26 points and 16 rebounds, and
Michael Pastore added 22 points as the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team closed out the 2018 calendar year with a 67-55 victory at John Jay on Sunday afternoon.
It was an up-and-down first half for the Blue and Gray, which fell behind by double digits less than 10 minutes in, but turned its fortunes around by holding the Bloodhounds (6-4) without a field goal for more than seven minutes to end the period.
E-town finished the half on a 16-3 run to lead 28-26 at the break. Moffatt (13 points) and Pastore (8) scored all but seven of the Blue Jays' (5-6) points in the half.
John Jay went back in front for a brief moment when Jordan Aiken converted three free throws at 17:53 of the second half, but Pastore responded with a 3-pointer on the Jays' next possession to make it 33-31 Elizabethtown and the guests remained in front the rest of the way.
Britt Moore's club pestered John Jay's shooters all afternoon. The Blue Jays limited the Bloodhounds to 30.8% shooting (8-of-26) in the second half and were even better guarding the perimeter. The hosts converted on just 4-of-22 3-point attempts in the game.
John Jay went more than eight minutes without a field goal in the second half, as E-town increased its lead to 54-44 with 5:32 to play.
Moffatt was an efficient 9-of-13 from the field and set a new career-high with five 3-pointers made on eight tries. The Mountville native was 3-of-4 at the foul line while playing a game-high 39 minutes.
Pastore scored 14 of his 22 points after halftime and was 5-of-8 shooting in the second half. The senior guard also had six boards and went 4-of-8 from deep as the Blue Jays were 11-of-25 from downtown --the seventh time this season they've hit 10 or more threes in a game.
Elizabethtown received nine points from
Bryce Greene (all in the second half), four from
Matt Thomas and five rebounds and three steals from
Ethan DuBois.
Kyle LaGuardia and Doug Levy led four Bloodhounds in double figures with 11 points apiece. Levy had a double-double with 13 rebounds. Essien Epps and Jerome Petty each followed with 10 points, but John Jay only made 17 field goals on 50 attempts (34%).
The Blue Jays finished 25-of-51 (49%) from the floor.
E-town will look to even its overall record and pick up its first Landmark Conference win next Saturday when it hosts Scranton at 4 p.m.
