ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's basketball team upset nationally-ranked Scranton on Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium when
Connor Moffatt drained a contested three-pointer as time expired to lift the Blue Jays to a 67-64 win over the Royals. Moffatt was one of three E-town players in double figures, led by
Bryce Greene's team-high 17.
A back-and-forth game through most of the first ten minutes of the first half, Kyle DeVerna hit back-to-back threes to take a one-point Scranton (12-1, 1-1 Landmark) lead, 13-12, and extend it to seven, 19-12.
Trailing by eight with 9:47 to go in the opening half, Elizabethtown (6-6, 1-1 Landmark) got right back into the game on five straight points from
Zach Nannen. The freshman knocked down a three from the left wing and on the following defensive possession, blocked DeVerna's layup attempt and came away with the defensive board. He collected his own miss at the offensive end and laid it back up for the two points. Nannen's basket made it 22-19 in favor of the Royals and forced the visitors into a 30 second timeout with 8:42 left.
Jackson Danzig dropped in one of his team-high five treys out of the timeout, but Greene made good on one of his own a few possessions later.
The Blue Jays kept it a one-possession game for the rest of the first half and then took the lead with less than a minute to go on
Michael Pastore's three-pointer. E-town led 37-35 at the half.
Elizabethtown got up eight on Nannen's bucket inside with a little over 14 minutes to go in the game. Nannen hauled in another offensive board and put back the rebound for two to make it 49-41. Danzig helped the Royals erase the deficit and the freshman wound up tying the game at 51-51 with another shot from beyond the arc. He knocked down a second three in the span of 40 seconds to give Scranton the lead back at 54-51.
The Royals threatened to pull away, but the Jays kept chipping away. Up no more than five, Scranton saw their lead disappear after Greene canned two straight threes on consecutive possessions for E-town.
Nannen hit another from the three-point range, his second of the contest, that gave Elizabethtown a 64-62 lead with 3:28 remaining. Both sides went scoreless for two and a half minutes until DeVerna made two from the free throw line.
Scranton had a chance at the win with the shot clock off and time winding down. Danzig took a jumper with seven seconds left around the free throw line, but some good defense forced the miss and Moffatt came down with the rebound. Alertly, the junior put the ball on the floor and dribbled his way across half court. He took one more dribble and launched a running shot that hung in the air and swished through the net as time expired to give Elizabethtown the upset win, 67-64.
It was the Blue Jays first upset of a ranked opponent since 2003. Greene led all E-town players with 17 points while Nannen had 12 off the bench and Moffatt supplied 11, including the game-winning three. Danzig had a game-high 21 points for Scranton.
Elizabethtown will host Goucher on Wednesday, January 9, at 7 p.m.
