Christ's career-high in points comes in one-point loss at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Saturday's Landmark Conference opener between the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team and Moravian came down to the final seconds, which saw the Greyhounds hit a free throw with two seconds to go that wound up giving them a one-point win over E-town, 93-92. Veronica Christ recorded a career-high 24 points in the game for the Jays. Maddie Capuano led all scorers with 40.

Elizabethtown (4-2, 0-1 Landmark) got off to a cold start shooting, connecting on 4 of 18 shots in the opening quarter. Christ and Roni Isenberg combined for nine of the Jays' 13 points. They trailed 18-13 going into the second.

The tables turned in terms of field goal percentage with E-town shooting 50 percent in the second quarter. Lydia Lawson, one of three for EC in double figures in the game, led the way with a quarter-high eight points. Mikayla Ruth and Christ each added five as the Blue Jays outscored Moravian (6-1, 1-0 Landmark) 22-18. Though the Greyhounds were just 5-for-15 from the field, they made up for a lack of field goals by hitting eight of their ten foul shots in the period and were 12-for-16 in the first half.

Elizabethtown led by as much as four in the second after Christ knocked down two at the foul line. It was 34-30 with 2:18 left in the second quarter. Karlie Brogan dropped in a layup with only a tick left on the clock and gave Moravian the lead, 36-35, going into halftime.

Christ was 3-for-4 in the third quarter and Ruth provided another six points, both from a pair of treys, to help E-town grab the lead by the end of the quarter, 58-57. Emma Powell, Lawson, and Marissa Emlet all were perfect from the free throw line and the Jays went 8-for-10 as a team to counteract a 6-for-17 performance from the field in the third.

Each team shot 50 percent or better in the fourth quarter. Elizabethtown hit 14 shots from the floor while Moravian made 10. The Jays also had a plus-six advantage in threes, but where Moravian thrived was at the charity stripe. The Greyhounds took 18 free throws in the fourth and hit 15 of the them. Capuano was 12-for-13 by her lonesome and had 19 fourth-quarter points.

Moravian led by eight multiple times throughout the final frame, but E-town continued to battle back and made it a game in the final two minutes. Brogan hit two free throws to up the lead to six for MOR, but Ruth sank her only three of the quarter on the Jays' ensuing possession to cut the deficit in half. A Moravian turnover created by Angie Hawkins then led to Emlet's layup on the fast break thanks to Lawson's assist and suddenly it was a one-point game, 83-82, with 1:10 left.

The Greyhounds went inside to Nadine Ewald, who hit the layup and stopped the clock with 57 seconds to go. An empty possession for Elizabethtown was then capped off by two Capuano foul shots and the hosts led by five, 87-82, with 35 seconds remaining.

Fast forward to Capuano splitting free throws with 12 ticks left and E-town down three, Hawkins hit the biggest shot of her young career, a three-pointer that tied the game up at 92-92 with only seven seconds remaining. Overtime was close, but a foul in the final two seconds put Ewald at the line for two. She made the first, but missed the second and the Jays had a chance. However, despite grabbing the defensive board, not enough time was left and Moravian hung on for the one-point win.

Christ finished 9-for-19 from the field and hit four threes. Ruth followed with 19 points and also knocked down four from beyond the arc. Lawson ended with 17 and seven assists. Emlet grabbed 10 rebounds for Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays will travel to Cabrini on Tuesday, December 4. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
