E-town downs Penn State Berks 90-73 in season opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Michael Pastore knocked down four of Elizabethtown's eight 3-pointers and scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in a 53-point first half for the Blue Jays in Thursday evening's 90-73 season-opening victory over Penn State Berks at Thompson Gymnasium.

Brandon Berry provided 17 points off the bench, while Matt Thomas (16) and Connor Moffatt (15) also reached double figures.

The Blue Jays (1-0) were feeling it early. Pastore and Moffatt each connected on a pair of threes to account for four of Elizabethtown's first six field goals, and the hosts built a 10-point lead, 16-6, less than six minutes in.

Elizabethtown kept coming at the Nittany Lions (0-1) in waves. Thomas had six points and Josh Christ four as the Jays went on a 15-6 run spanning 3:30 to push their advantage to 19, 40-21, with 6:12 left before halftime.

Freshman Zach Nannen converted a traditional 3-point play at the buzzer to give the Jays a 53-39 lead at the break. It was E-town's highest scoring first half since putting up 53 against Penn State Schuylkill back on Nov. 16, 2014.

Though the Blue Jays were more efficient from the field in the second half, shooting 60.7% to 57.1% in the first, Berks managed to draw within six on a Matt Seip jumper with 16:44 to go.

Following a timeout, Thomas responded with a jumper in the paint. Elizabethtown would hold the Lions scoreless over the next 3:40, while running off 10 straight points to solidify its lead, 63-47.

Latrell Carroll cleaned up in the paint for the visitors with a game-high 26 points on 12-of-14 shooting and 12 rebounds. Carroll was the primary reason why Penn State Berks outscored the Jays, 11-4, in second chance points.

Elizabethtown was better everywhere else, though. The Blue Jays flipped 25 Lion turnovers into 42 points, received 27 points from reserves and topped 20 fast break points. Behind a 4-for-4 effort from Berry, the Jays were also perfect on seven free throw attempts.

Point guard Ethan DuBois led the Blue Jays with seven assists and four steals. He also chipped in nine points.

Pastore was 7-for-13 from the floor (4-for-8 3FG), Thomas went 7-for-9, Moffatt 6-for-10 (3-for-6 3FG) and Berry 6-for-8 as Elizabethtown shot 58.7% (37-for-63) on the night.

Four of the Lions' five starters posted double-digit scoring outputs. E'drise Hightower had 11, Brandon Wise 10 and Seip 10 and seven rebounds.

Elizabethtown will head south to Chestertown, Maryland, to face Washington College next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
