Blue Jays' comeback falls short at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Elizabethtown's first road trip of the season couldn't have started much better.

The Blue Jays hit 10 of their first 12 shots and constructed a 15-point lead with five minutes remaining in the first half.

Washington College eventually turned the tide, limiting E-town to 11 points over the next 15 minutes. The Shoremen withstood a late rally to defeat the Jays, 73-71, Tuesday evening at the Cain Athletic Center.

Brandon Berry and Michael Pastore had five points each and Ethan DuBois scored four of his team- and career-high 16 in the final four minutes as the Blue and Gray trimmed a 12-point Washington lead to two.

The Shoremen (2-0) didn't help their cause down the stretch, turning the ball over three times and missing nine of their last 14 free throws.

Back-to-back empty trips to the line on Washington's final two possessions allowed Elizabethtown (1-1) just over five seconds to go for the tie or win trailing by two.

The Blue Jays couldn't get up court fast enough and a rushed attempt by freshman Zach Nannen to get the ball towards the rim fell short as time expired.

Coming off its highest scoring first-half in five seasons against Penn State Berks last Thursday, Elizabethtown looked poised to challenge the 53 points it put up against the Nittany Lions.

The Blue Jays drilled four 3-pointers and scored on nine of their first 10 offensive trips down the floor to go up 23-12 less than seven minutes in.

Junior guard Bryce Greene, making his season debut, sank three first-half treys and a pair of free throws. Connor Moffatt hit E-town's seventh 3-pointer of the half and with five minutes left, the visitors were shooting 71.4% and leading by 15, 35-20.

The Jays' fast start would fizzle, however and the Shoremen capitalized.

Austin Allen scored five of his game-high 19 points in Washington's 13-2 half-ending run that pulled them within 37-33.

Elizabethtown didn't fare much better to start the second, misfiring on nine of its first 12 shots. Washington outscored the Jays 40-11 during a 15-minute stretch encompassing the final five minutes of the first half and first 10 of the second to grab their largest lead of the night, 60-46.

The Shoremen were aggressive on the glass all night. Allen, Daniel Brown and Dallas Marshall all had eight rebounds as the hosts had a 38-26 advantage.

Allen (five) and Brown (four) combined four nine of Washington's 14 offensive boards. The Shoremen used the extra opportunities to outscore the Jays 23-6 in second chance points and 34-20 in the paint.

DuBois was 5-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-4 from long range. Three more E-town players scored in double figures beind him, as Greene totaled 13, Moffatt 12 and the former Shoreman, Berry, 11. Moffatt and Nannen shared the team lead with five rebounds apiece.

Elizabethtown headed into the locker room shooting 57.1% (12-of-21), but made just 11-of-30 in the second half to finish at 45.1% (23-of-51) on the night. The Blue and Gray were 3-of-15 from 3-point range in the second.

Despite trailing by 15 in the first half, the Shoremen remained relatively consistent throughout. They shot 50% in the first and 48% in the second.

Allen's 19 points and eight boards in 33 minutes led Washington. Marshall went 7-of-10 from the floor for 17 points and Tray Wright had 11.

Elizabethtown is on the road again Saturday for a non-conference match-up with Shenandoah at 4 p.m.
