Blue Jays off to 2-0 start at Lycoming Tip-Off Classic

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Elizabethtown women's volleyball started strong at the Lycoming Tip-Off Classic Friday evening, sweeping the host Warriors and Medaille.

ELIZABETHTOWN 3, LYCOMING 0
27-25, 25-17, 25-19

Lycoming nearly stunned the Jays after being down 9-2 early in the first set, but Elizabethtown recovered just in time and went on to control the rest of the match.

Surprisingly, a Mackenzie Garner kill and Elle Shatto ace were the only offense the Blue Jays got in their match-opening run. The Warriors (10-11) created their own deficit with six attacking errors and a pair of setting mistakes, before eventually chipping away at E-town's lead.

The Blue Jays (12-11) still had to be upbeat when Sarah Schneider's kill made it 21-17, but Lycoming scored the next five points to take its first lead of the set.

Lycoming was on the brink of winning the set after Alysa McDevitt and Lilly Singleton combined on a block for a 24-22 lead. A service error by the hosts and a kill from Shelly Yohe allowed E-town to stave off two set points.

Down 25-24, the Blue Jays turned to their senior leader, Garner, to carry them the rest of the way. She answered with back-to-back kills and a solo block as E-town won the set 27-25.

Sets two and three were much less dramatic.

Elizabethtown turned a pair of five-point runs into a 25-17 win in the second. Schneider and Marisa Krinock each had four kills in the set and Shatto had three as the Jays hit a match-best .406 (16 kills-3 errors-32 attempts).

Trailing 7-3 in the third, the Blue and Gray used an 8-1 run to go in front 11-8 and never trailed again. Krinock contributed four blocks and Schneider two aces in the set-changing run.

Krinock was outstanding, finishing with seven kills, a .462 attacking percentage, six blocks (three solo) and three aces. Schneider had team-highs of nine kills and seven digs.

Garner and Shatto registered seven kills apiece, while setter Rileigh Hudock posted 33 assists, five digs and four kills.

Elizabethtown's 10 team blocks were a new season-high. Lycoming got nine kills from Kiannah Titus and six kills and nine digs from Singleton in defeat.

ELIZABETHTOWN 3, MEDAILLE 0
25-8, 25-11, 25-21

Backed by a season-high 13 service aces, the Blue Jays made it a Friday sweep with a 3-0 drubbing of Medaille.

Jenna Harne accounted for three of E-town's six aces in a dominant 25-8 first-set victory. When the Blue Jays (13-11) weren't scoring off their serves, they did it through kills.

Elle Shatto had all five of her kills in the first set and Sarah Schneider added three as the Jays recorded 12 on 24 attempts with just one error for a .458 clip.

Head coach Alex Hinsey was able to work his reserves in early and all 12 available Elizabethtown players appeared in at least two sets. Freshman Elizabeth Zeiber had three kills and eight digs, while classmate Nicole Greiner collected two kills. The Blue Jays cruised 25-11 in the second and won the third, 25-21.

Katie Kennedy delivered five aces and seven digs. Harne had eight digs to go with her trio of aces, Shelly Yohe totaled five kills and Garner had four kills.

Medaille (4-14) was done in by a plethora of attacking errors. The Mavericks hit in the negative in both the second (-.179) and third (-.156) sets, finishing the night with a -.112 percentage (16 kills-27 errors-98 attempts).

Eleanor Clarke was the only Medaille player without a negative attacking percentage. Clarke led her team with eight kills. Gina Appenheimer had 12 digs.
