ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Catholic and the Elizabethtown College field hockey team battled one another in the rain for the Landmark's top spot. The winner of Saturday's game would earn the No. 1 seed and home field in the upcoming Landmark playoffs. The Cardinals scored the lone goal of the game in the first half and went on to win 1-0 to earn the No. 1 seed. The Blue Jays end as the No. 2 seed.
The game only featured a total of nine shots over the course of 70 minutes as each team didn't allow much in and around their own goals. The first shots of the game for both teams didn't find their mark and went wide of the cages.
As it turns out, the only goal of the afternoon didn't even come in the run of play. Carly Philbin inserted a penalty corner and on the ensuing shot at goal, an infraction was called near goal and a penalty stroke was awarded to the Cardinals. Leading scorer Meghan Shallow stepped up to the spot and went high and right with her shot for the score, her sixth of the season.
Goalie
Margo Donlin had to make back-to-back stops on Hannah Schied and Katie Murphy midway through the first half to keep it 1-0. They were the only two shots on goal for Catholic (8-8, 7-0 Landmark) the rest of the half.
Emily Garvin got a good look at goal in the 46th minute for Elizabethtown (13-5, 5-2 Landmark), but the shot clanged off the pads of Kim McGroary, her only save of the game.
The Cardinals kept the Blue Jays' attack in check and didn't allow a shot after Garvin's.
Catholic finished with a 7-2 advantage in shots.
Elizabethtown will host Susquehanna, the No. 3 seed, on Wednesday, October 31, at 3:30 p.m. at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays defeated the River Hawks 1-0 in overtime on September 22.
