ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was another one-goal game between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Susquehanna in Wednesday's Landmark Conference semifinal at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays got the win in the regular season in September, but this time around, it was the River Hawks that prevailed in a 1-0 game to advance to Saturday's Landmark Conference Championship.
The midfielders and defensive players were busy throughout the game as scoring chances, especially in the first half, were tough to come by. Elizabethtown (13-6) managed two shots while Susquehanna (10-8) had just one. The difference was the River Hawks' lone shot resulted in the only goal of the game.
Vivian Simone inserted a penalty corner at 31:22 that went out top to AJ Smith. Smith rifled the ball back into Simone at the left post and she one-touched the ball into the cage at 31:28 that gave SU the 1-0 lead.
Madison Kubik had a shot saved early in the half and the Jays' second opportunity came with 2:19 left in the first half, but it was blocked.
E-town had two chances to begin the second half, but
Maggie Fees and
Lauren Scheib had shots saved by Susquehanna goalie Emily DiGaetano. A few minutes later, at the other end, Hunter Pitman's chance in the circle went right of the cage.
As the Blue Jays pressed higher up the field, the River Hawks were able to catch them out of position and ended up with a 3-on-0 with only
Margo Donlin left to defend the goal. With a little over 21 minutes to go in the game, Maddie Taylor brought the ball down the right side and cut in toward goal. She had two players on the opposite side waiting for the ball, so Taylor crossed the ball. Donlin read the play all the way and stepped up in the circle and dove to knock the ball out of harm's way.
EC had another pair of chances off a corner, but DiGaetano stood tall and made back-to-back saves to keep it 1-0 with 16 and a half minutes remaining.
Gabby Martin saved a goal for Susquehanna with 11 and a half minutes showing. Fees took a penalty corner insert from
Olivia Beachley and sent it in on goal.
Grace Hardy deflected it past DiGaetano, who was out to try and stop the shot. Martin was there at the back post and slid across to swipe the ball away with her stick and deny the Blue Jays the game-tying goal.
DiGaetano made one more save the rest of the way as the River Hawks held on to eliminate Elizabethtown from the Landmark Conference playoffs, 1-0. Susquehanna advances to Saturday's championship final, where they will host Scranton. The Royals, the fourth seed, took down top-seeded Catholic 1-0 in the day's other semifinal.
