Scranton scratches out 75-68 victory over Blue Jays

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Scranton out-chanced Elizabethtown 15-2 at the foul line in the second half to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit and drop the Blue Jays, 75-68, Saturday afternoon.

Junior guard Michael Pastore went 5-of-5 from downtown and sophomore forward Connor Moffatt was 4-of-7 as the duo combined to make nine of E-town's 12 triples.

The Blue Jays (3-9, 0-2 Landmark) trailed 20-13 halfway through the first half, but a pair of Matt Thomas baskets, a layup from Ethan DuBois and Pastore's stop-and-pop 3-pointer completed a quick 9-2 run to pull Elizabethtown even at 22 with 7:59 left.

Pastore also beat the buzzer with his fourth 3-pointer of the first half to give Elizabethtown its largest lead of the day, 39-32, at halftime. The Williamsport native converted all four of his 3-point attempts in the period. Thomas was a perfect 5-of-5 for 10 points.

E-town held 54-53 lead with 10:54 to go after Moffatt made 1-of-2 at the foul line, but the freebie came during an 8-minute, 38-second stretch where the Jays only came up with one basket.

Scranton took advantage with a 15-3 run to grab a 64-56 lead closing in on the five-minute mark. Pastore cut the Royals' (5-8, 1-1) lead to four, 66-62, with 2:24 to play on his only three of the second half, but the Blue and Gray could never get it back to a one-possession game.

Ethan Danzig scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, when the Royals outscored E-town 43-29. Teammate Kyle DeVerna was 5-of-6 from the foul line, where Scranton lived in the final 20 minutes. The Royals were 12-of-15 in the second half, while the Jays only attempted three free throws in the contest.

Four of Scranton's five starters scored in double figures. Matthew Mancuso had 14 points, DeVerna 13 and Drew Schankweiler 10 along with a team-high nine rebounds. Mitch Cross added 10 points off the bench.

Blue Jays' leading scorer Bryce Greene was held to nine points for the second game in a row after scoring double figures in each of the team's first 10 games. Greene was pressured into 4-of-12 shooting (1-of-7 3FG) on Saturday.

Moffatt and Pastore scored 15 points apiece to lead the Jays, and Thomas had 12. Moffatt also had nine rebounds, but the team's 28 rebounds were tied for its second fewest in a game this season.

E-town returns home Wednesday night to face Catholic in a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m.
