Catholic surges back to down men's basketball 84-73

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown led an upper echelon Landmark Conference opponent for the second game in a row, but visiting Catholic turned the tide early in the second half on its way to defeating the Blue Jays 84-73 at Thompson Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

Michael Pastore, who was 5-for-5 from 3-point range in Saturday's contest at Scranton, made it 10 in a row by canning his first five attempts against the Cardinals. Pastore's teammates followed his lead as Connor Moffatt went 2-for-2, Brandon Berry 1-for-1 and Bryce Greene drained another of the Blue Jays' nine treys in the opening half.

Sophomore guard Ethan DuBois claimed the role of distributor on many of those. The Manahawkin, N.J., native registered seven of his career-high nine assists in the first half. E-town (3-10, 0-3 Landmark) held a 41-32 advantage at the half after shooting 57.1% overall (16-for-28), while holding the Cardinals (8-6, 2-1) to 39.3% (11-of-28), more than seven points below its season average.

Elizabethtown extended its lead to a game-high 11 less than 20 seconds into the second half on a layup from DuBois, but Catholic bewildered the Jays over the next eight minutes.

Three-time All-Landmark First Teamer Jay Howard scored 10 of his 30 points and the Cardinals made four 3-pointers during a 28-7 run. CUA took its first double-digit lead, 60-50, on Howard's jumper with 11:46 to go.

The Blue and Gray trimmed Catholic's lead to seven twice more. They were unable to slow the Cards' offensive onslaught, however, with Catholic heating up to 60.6% (20-of-33) in the second half while outscoring E-town 52-32. Catholic finished the night at 50.8% and E-town was unable to match its impressive start, going 11-of-31 after the break.

Howard led four Cardinals in double figures after coming up with 21 of his 30 points in the second. Jimmy Golaszewski added 19 on 5-of-9 shooting from long range. Brandon Easton had 11 points and Riley Hayes 10 along with a team-leading nine rebounds.

Pastore and Greene recorded 19 points each, tops for E-town. The Blue Jay bench outscored Catholic's 23-11, aided by Moffatt's 11.DuBois did a bit of everything with nine dimes, six points, six rebounds and a steal.

Elizabethtown gets another shot at its first league win Saturday when Susquehanna visits for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
