Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#16/19 Scranton hands women's basketball first Landmark loss

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team was 3-0 coming off a loss prior to Saturday's Landmark Conference game at Scranton. That streak came to an end as the Royals upended the Blue Jays 78-63 to hand E-town its first multi-game skid and first loss in league play. Mikayla Ruth led the Jays with a team-high 15 points.

Like the temperatures outside, Elizabethtown (7-5, 1-1 Landmark) got off to a cold start shooting, missing the first four field goals while also committing two turnovers. Scranton got out to a 7-0 lead before Ruth broke it up with her first bucket of the afternoon.

Ruth had E-town's first five points, but the Royals' hot start had the hosts out to an 11-5 lead. Bridgette Mann had the hot-hand all game long, including from downtown. She drained one of her game-high five treys as the shot clock expired in the first quarter to push Scranton (12-1, 1-1 Landmark) further ahead.

The lead grew in the second quarter after the Blue Jays started 0-for-7 from the floor. Ashley Reynolds' two free throws were Elizabethtown's only points until another pair of foul shots by Marissa Emlet with 4:49 left in the half. The sophomore's free throws cut Scranton's lead to 32-17.

The Royals were efficient from the field through the first 20 minutes of play, hitting just under 50 percent of their shots, but knocking in 5-of-7 three-point attempts, including four from Mann. She had a game-high 21 points (14 at the half), her third game over 20 on the season.

Scranton had E-town doubled up at 34-17, but two quick baskets from the Blue Jays got the visitors a little closer. Lydia Lawson found Veronica Christ on the fast break before Abby Beyer hit a driving Emlet the following possession to force the Royals into a timeout to stem the momentum shift.

Elizabethtown's shooting improved greatly out of the break. Ruth and Reynolds combined to hit 8-of-9 shots in the second half and as a team the Jays shot 56 percent (14-25 FG) over the final two quarters. The only issue was Scranton shot even better. The Royals hit on 59.1 percent of their shots and added on another six threes.

Lawson connected on her third trey of the game, a season high, in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 14, but it was as close as E-town would get the rest of the third. Scranton ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 21 heading into the fourth.

The Royals maintained their lead in the final quarter. Jill Freeman came up with a steal in the final 20 seconds and went the other way for the fast break layup that made it a 15-point game. Scranton ran out the remainder of the clock for the 78-63 finals.

Ruth's 15 points came on 6-for-9 shooting including a pair of threes. 10 of her 15 came in the second half. Reynolds was also in double figures for the Blue Jays with ten points. Scranton's 11 made threes tied a season high for the Royals. Mann tied her season-high with five treys. Katie Broderick, Julia Gantz, and Makenzie Mason were also in double digits for Scranton.

The road doesn't get any easier for Elizabethtown. The Jays travel to Washington, D.C. to face Catholic on Wednesday, January 10 at 7 p.m.
